dip stick location on a 302 front sump

i put an 89 302 in my 66 mustang and i got a 8 quart front sump oil pan from milodon, i have a timing chain cover with a dip stick hole in it. could i just use the dip stick from the origional location on the side of the block or do i need a new one for the timing chain cover?

You can put it anywhere you'd like, as long as you don't leave any other locations open.

actually, you cant use the one on the later block... it's for a rear sump pan... you need to block it and use the one in the timing cover..

I just meant as long as it goes into the pan, that's all that matters, but you are right. I hadn't thought of it quite that way.

The only thing to watch for is to use the correct dip stick tube and dipstick for the location you choose.

You're going to want to find an aftermarket dipstick that has a longer reach. The only thing that matters is that it's a tight fit.

um... if you put it in the side.. is the front sump far enough back for it to even go on the oil? the pan in back is pretty shallow.. hate to have the dipstick hit the pan and curve up into the crank..

when you get a dipstick, change the oil and filter... start it up... then let it sit for awhile the mark the full level yourself... easiest way to have it right

In blocks currently supplied with front sump pans, the dipstick tube nipple is located in the side of the pan and the side block location is plugged. I conclude from this Ford engineers don't want you using the side block location with the front sump pan. In the case of the front sump pan, the locations of choice are the timing cover or side of pan locations.

Believe it or not, that was the point I was trying to get to. lol. It really doesn't matter which dipstick you use, or where it goes, as long as it reaches down into the pan, not hitting anything, of course, because ultimately, the only way you will ever be able to properly gauge how much oil you have is exactly as you described.
