Does the engine have a PCV system on it??
If it does, maybe the valve is clogged. How much smoke?? All engines create pressure in the crankcase. A small puff here and there isn't anything to be worried about. But, guite a bit means blow by. Too much of it. Very worn rings or broken rings can cause this. Also, broken or cracked piston. Do you have any noise on start up?? Old engine, new engine??
