starting engine
 
i have rebuilt my motor now it won't start. i have a white spark at #1 spark plug,,,shouldn't it be blue. got gas coming in carb, checked timing and it is correct,,,any words of wisdom out there?i have a 66 stang with a 302 v8, edelbrock intake and carb, tri-y headers and crane cam.

your gonna have to keep playing around until you can get it to run . i recently started my rebuilt engine i have a edelbrock manifold and a 600 carb . man i had flames shooting out of the carb ran like junk until i played with the timing enough to keep it running to adjust the air/ fuel mixtures also does your car show any signs of trying to start like backfiring , is there compression any change in sound when you move the distributor let me know and i will try to help you out also make sure you got the distributor is in correct..

just got home from work and tried to start it again after 1 day of sitting and i gave 1 kick on the pedal and it almost started,,,at least it coughed a few times, after looking in the carb it looks like it's flooding out..luckily i have a holley 750 on a shelf so i will try it out. i double checked the distributor and the plug wires, they are all correct,, i think i should have a brighter spark though,,,blue not white. next plan of attack i guess will be new points, condensor, rotor and cap, also a new coil:(

When at TDC the rotor is at #1 plug wire, correct? If you have spark, compression, and gas, it has to fire. That is assuming the cam and crank are alligned correctly.

at tdc the rotor is just b4 or just about to hit the #1 slot on the cap and at that point is when my points are open the most,,,is that correct? i just tried my other carb and it is leaking also. both carbs have been sitting up for 2 years while i have been saving to get the rest of the car done. i have gas all over my intake around the carb area. i guess i will have to bite the bullet and do a rebuild kit.. any suggestions which carb i should rebuild,,,,,the 600 edelbrock or the 750,,,4010 holley????
the mechanic that rebuilt my engine also told me he degreed the cam at 4 degrees advanced... will this make a difference on where i place the distributor?

Try cranking at WOT. You may be rich with the wet description. Keep your foot on the floor whe3n cranking and see what happens.

i will try and get a carb kit for my holley and reinstall tonight.

2 points to consider:

1) Try exactly what Rev is suggesting. Don't stop until it fires or the battery nearly dies. Eventually it will catch. Just make sure you don't pump the pedal. Just put it to the floor and crank it over.

2) The Holley 4010 only has accelerator pump and power valve gaskets as places it could leak.

thanks for the info. i just installed new points, rotor, condensor, cap, and found a friend to help with both my carbs. hopefully i'll have some good news by this weekend.

Something else to remember.Don't know if you did it or not but remember how easy it is to set the timing 180 deg. out. cycles twice before it is at true tdc

i tried moving the plug wires around 180 degrees and it still didn't help. i going to have to wait a couple of days till both my carbs are done and then i'll start over. i'll let ya'll know if it starts.
