Steering Wheel Swap
I have a 92 LX 5.0 convertible. It was crashed in the front and someone has swapped the stock wheel with a Grant crappy aftermarket wheel. I want to change back to a stock wheel, but not with the added expense of an airbag (as was probably the reason the previous owner installed the aftermarket wheel). It has cruise control. My question is...will the 87-93 mustang steering wheels interchange? Will the cruise buttons work on mine from like a 89? Is the spline the same? I can find a wheel all day long at the junk yard, but they can't tell me.

all the splines from 87-93 are the same but the heigth of the steering wheel is different the airbag steering wheel is quite a bit thicker than the non air bag wheel but if it already has a grant on it the 87-90 steering wheel should mount similarily it's an easy swap and should be fairly cheap. good luck

I have an 88 with a non airbag wheel and I just recently pulled it off to put a grant wheel on. It is one of the more expensive ones and I really like it.
Anyways, the Grant wheels use a little adapter kit so that all of their wheels fit on any car. You will have to unbolt the wheel from the adapter and then use a puller to get the adapter off. And on my car there is no spline on the shaft, it is a round shaft with one flat side. The stock wheels just slide right on and bolt right up. hope this helps some

oh and one more thing, the Grant wheel sits a couple inches closer to me because of the adapter

If you are interested I have the air bag from my '90LX that I will sell CHEAP. I also have the wheel but it's in rough shape. The foam has seperated from the steel ring. I installed a Grant mainly for the smaller diameter because the '90 doesn't have tilt and it was a pain to get in & out with the stock wheel.
If you are interested e-mail me and we can figure out a price and how to ship it (explosives?) |

Sure thing. I have found a lot of good wheels down here, but they have no bag. I would be happy if there was a way to eliminate the bag and still keep the wheel aesthetically appealing.
Anyway...e-mail me at meotta@gte.net (recent refugee from the import camp) and we'll hash out the details. I shipped an airbag from my old Miata before...I called and if I recall, there was no issue with UPS. Thanks, Mike |
