Straight6 to V8 Conversion
Hey i have a 1967 Mustang Coupe Straight 6. I am currently looking at a 289 from a 67 cougar and a 302 from a 69 Gran Torino. I am wondering if my 3-speed (isnt a top loader) would work with the 289 or 302? Also what engine would be a better pick the 289 or the 302. I have a 8-inch 5 lug rearend for my stang also just hasnt been installed. I also want to know what modifications that i will have to do when i convert my stang to a V8... suspension, tranny, brakes, cooling system etc.

Re: Straight6 to V8 Conversion
Well there has been many thread about this, so a search will help you dig a bit deeper than Im going to go. Your 3spd should bolt right up, mine did when I swapped over to a v8 in my 65'. Turns out the 3spd is a pretty tough transmission, it took all the abuse I could throw at it. (Which was quite a bit)
If your determined to use one of the two go with the 302, more cubes is always better. What I would really suggest would be either a 5.0 HO out of a 87-92 Mustang (I think 92' was the last year of the forged pistons) or a 5.0L out of a late 90's explorer. You can keep them efi or swap over to carb, but there is a big advantage to a roller cam, plus you can keep the serpentine belt system. You will want to upgrade your suspension and cooling system at least. I got away running the stock 6cyl front suspension for awhile with the v8, though most dont recommend it because the I6 spindles are pretty weak. Do a search about swapping over to granada spindles. (I actually have a pair I could sell you, but do your research first) I think you have to upgrade the radiator, I cant remember if the water inlet/outlets are on the same sides or not. Anyway I would recommend an aftermarket aluminum radiator with electric fan/fans and an overflow bottle. When I did my swap I upgraded to a 3-row brass unit, larger than a stock v8 but it still didnt sufficiently cool my very mild 302. Another one of my problems was using the stock fan. Learn from my mistakes!! Does your stang have font disc/rear drum already? If it doesnt I would upgrade to front disc, which the granada swap would give you, then you will also need a proportioning valve. Anyway I hope I helped you out somewhat, a little research on your part and you will be well on your way! Any other questions dont be scared to ask, many have gone before you.

Re: Straight6 to V8 Conversion
I was thinking the 302 also. I have a radiator from a 289 in my mustang and i customized the hoses to make it fit with my straight six but it should work for a 302. I have front/rear drum brakes. How much would you want for the spindles?
