Every state is diffrernt, you'll have to go to your local DMV or State police to get a copy.

I thought about the DMV too, but here in Texas the regs that govern street legality are covered by the Dept of Public Safety. I went to the Texas DPS web site and found out what I needed to know. The rules on engine swaps were kinda surprising (emmissions mostly).

It's amazing how stupid some people who should know these things are. I asked the guy who was doing the safety inspection on my car one time what kind of mods I could make and be street legal (I was interested in some weekend racing) and he basically went off on me and told me that you can't drive a race car on the street. How in the world could this guy be qualified to make the inspection if he did not know the laws governing street legality? I pretty much wound up in an argument with the guy and had to tell him how pitiful it was that he was allowed to keep his job. I've never been back to that place again.

Good luck. Doc.

Fordkid.

Try looking at

www.dmv.ca.gov

Also, try asking for a tech book for out of state cars. Just lie and tell them you are thinking about bringing in a car of X vintage from Maine or something, and you want to make sure the car will comply with CA rules. If they give you grief, let me know and I'll make some calls.

Gotta love how they treat kids (teens)... I always have **** like that happen to me... They think I'm some kind of knob cause I am asking a serious question... I would of said so if I don't ask if it's illegal to put a jet engine in my car it will be legal? I'm quite curious on what's legal in Ontario or Canada for that matter.
I've heard rumours that it's 500hp is the limit for street but I've seen cars out there with more then that.... but also they arn't stock so there is no way for the goverment to know really.

Hey the thing is, alot of the legality of it is judgemental. I own a 1970 conv with a Boss351. Now I dont have to pass emmisions, the manifold a Wieand Excellorator is not legal on lets say a 1989 with a 5.0 because it wont pass the emmisions. Technically a highrise single plain manifold is not legal on mine either. But because all I have to do is pass the saftey it passes. One sure fail is to have nitrous! At one of the local hang outs the cops showed up with 2 trailers. They blocked the exits and everyone poped their hoods. Anyone with nitrous, that they could find that is, was confiscated. There is a fine line between the 2 and no clear definition. It seems to be what you can get away with. But having your ride taken away seems to be the hard way to learn!

Isn't it pretty much your not allowed having the bottle in your car? So aslong as you left the bottle at home your fine right?
In the summer there is usually a big car gathering in a empty parking lot. Apx. 500 cars show up and usually the cops are there waiting for you to leave or do something stupid. They often pull over cars and check under the hood and I've seen them tow away cars before. Also exhaust can be a big thing that isn't legal. I got asked by a cop if my exhaust was legal but I had stepped on it, and I was probably between 3500-5500rpm so I would imagin it was loud.

Of course it's a bit much for them to take your car over a little NOS. But I'm here in NYC and there is a big problem with street racing right now. And the cops hit the place where all the racers meet. Dont they know there are ways to hide your NOS so that it cant be seen!!

Fordkid In california ther are not smog laws really for a 72 and lower cars. My car dosen't have one single peice of smog equipment on it. All i did to get it registered was they checked the title with the vin numbers and that was it. So you have nothing to worry about you can do what ever you want to the car.
