swapping a 289 for a 302 roller
Has anyone done this? My buddy has a 66, 289 and wants to put a 302 in it. What parts can we use off the 289? We're going to have a built block (heads, cam, pistons, etc..) What all will we need? will the 289 motor mounts work on the 302? what about the power steering and alternator? Another thing, what transmissions went in the '66? he has a 2 speed auto.
He just wants a motor that he can rag on, the 289 is original, and he doesnt want to blow it up. ------------------ '93 4 banger notch converted to a 5.0 AOD, high flow cat H-Pipe, 2 1/2 inch flows, 4.10's, 110 lph pump, K&N, pullies, Alum. driveshaft, 14 degree timing, 180 degree thermo,. 14.2@98 MPH Columbus, Ohio |

Depends on the year model 302. One from the 60's or 70's is a direct swap. If your buddy is using one from the 80's or newer ( 5.0 ) then the following are some key issues...
The swap is pretty simple...as long as you use an automatic transmission. The c-4 is a direct bolt in, and even the late model aod will fit with a kit to install it. Most of the parts from the 289 will bolt up, but watch out for the harmonic balancer/pulley. You have to use the late model flywheel and harm. balancer because Ford changed the balance around 1982. The old 289 balancer probably uses a 3-bolt pulley, where as the 5.0 pulley is a 4-bolt. Ford changed to a 4-bolt crank pulley sometime in the late sixties or early seventies, so finding a pulley that will work with the old v-belts should not be difficult. Intake, headers, engine mounts and accessories should bolt up just fine. Remember not to try to use the 5.0 water pump with a v-belt set up, it will be turning backwords and not pump any water. ------------------ 66 GT Fastback 5.0, 5-speed, 3.40 gears, Fuel Injection soon |

Good info 66fastback!
I put a '71 302 in my '65. All the original parts bolted right on the 302. I've got a C4 automatic though. -JON |

what automatic's went in the '66's? I'm not sure what he has, i deal with the newer mustangs more than the old ones, but i figure it will be a learning experience. His transmission is auto, did they put c4's in the '66 mustangs? Will we have trouble with the transmission bolt pattern? let me know.

If it is original, it is a C4 (Three gear automatic). Ford didn't have a two-speed automatic in '66 -JON
