Swapping 289 for 4.6L ???

New project, Bought a 66 conv. less motor and trany, needing floors, rear quarts and one front fender. Also put a bid in on a 1999 ford crown vic police cruiser in my town's auction, I won it for ($12) twelve dollars. Car was hit on rear quart, no damage too drive tran, have complete P71 4.6L and trans with only 61,000 miles on them. I don't have the 289 that was in the 66 too get measurements from. Will the 4.6 fit in the engine bay ??? On a nother note looking for good vender for after market parts. Have year ones and NPD catalogs. Have no problem spending money for better parts, then fighting them on the install. Thank you for any help...mike

No, not even close without major mods.

What do you want when your car is finished? A fuelie motor is perfect for a cruiser/rod and a 5.0 is an easy no cut swap. If you dont mind cutting and want the cammer motor, look to a mustang II front end (rack and pinion steering is a plus) as it will allow you to cut out the shock towers. The 4.6 is slightly wider than a 385 series big block (429/460) and will require shock tower removal. This is not a simple bolt in swap as the 5.0 but the end results can be well worth it if this is the direction you want your project to go in! Look to the ford racing catolog as it usually lists engine dimensions.

there are kits to help take out the shock towers, I think they were designed to fit the 351's (easier) into the 65-66. Its the sheetmetal that you put in there to cover the hole left after cutting out the shock tower.

Even with the shock towers totally gone, I'm not sure about that swap ?? Isn't the 4.6 supposed to be one of the widest V8's in existance ??
I heard it was wider than a 460, wider than a FE big block, even wider than an old 426 Hemi ??? Thats just side to side issues, who knows about firewall clearance ??
It would be my guess, that swap will cause you great grief, heartache, frustration and an all out assualt on your wallet !!

I have seen a 4.6 4v in a 65 mustang at a car show. Ofcourse the shock towers where cut out but it does fit. The guy was not around so i didn't get to ask any questions. Not sure of the width differeance between a 4v and 2v.

Quick grab a tape measure and head for your engine compartment!

Engine-----302------351w------460--------4.6sohc----4.6dohc

Height-----20 3/4"---23 3/4"----26"---------26"--------29 7/8"

Length----27 1/2"----27 1/2"----32"---------28"---------28"

Width-----18 3/4"-----21"-------26"--------25 5/8"------30"

I was incorrect earlier the sohc is 3/8" narrower than the 385 series
engine (460). I have seen 460 engines in several vintage maustangs so the sohc 4.6 is do-able. I also believe the dohc 4.6 is do-able but will require a little more work and planning. The more work you can do yourself the easier financilly it will be to convert, if that is not possible shop around with quality shops and do a little price research. Remember to compare apples to apples you may get less fit and finish from shop to shop, it would be best for you to list exactly what you want (no more - no less) for them to create a bid.
