I have a T-5 in my 66', if i were to do it over i would go with the Tremec 3550 or
TKO transmission. The toploader is totaly bulletproof the T-5 can be damaged by high horsepower and or a heavy hand. The 3550 and TKO are stronger transmissions then the T-5. The price of the tremec's as come done alot in the last year, it makes it alot more attractive. Regards Billgear www.289mustang.com |

I have a top loader in both my 67's on a 289 the other a 351. I swear by them. They are bullit proof. I find deals no and again. The last one I bought for a friend was $400 came with the trans the bellhousing complete clutch. Used but a good core, flywheel. and the shifter.

Re: T-5 or Toploader 4- Speed
What kind of engine do you have in this '69? It depends on the engine and mabe also the rear end gear ratio. My dad used to use a toploader in his '64 Galaxie, with a 390. This transmission was meant to handle alot of torque, mainly on the dragstip, which is why it is pretty much indestructable. The only bad thing was that when it was in the Galaxie, the engine sounded forced due to the lower ratios of the transmission. He currently has a Tremec T-5 in the car, but he plans on either putting the toploader back in the car, or getting another transmission that can handle the torque. The T-5 on the other hand, has the 5th gear, but if the engine has too much torque, it could get damaged. My uncle had the same toploader in his '67 mustang [289] back in the late 80's early 90's and it ran very well on the highway, according to my dad. It all depends on the engine and rear end gears. It also depends on what you want to use the car for. If you want to use it for racing, or as a weekend cruiser, the toploader. If it is a daily driver then the 5-speed. Hope this information was helpful.
hepcat69- my dad used a cable system when he put the t5 in his car. |
