Exclamation Tachometer Trouble

The needle on my tach sometimes jumps or surges. I suspect there is some induced voltage getting into the tach circuit, maybe from a loose wire somewhere behind the dash. If this is not the case, are there any known causes/fixes for tachometer troubles?
