Default Starter Relay/Solenoid

Is it okay to hook up the wires directly to the battery, instead of hooking them to relay/solenoid side that hooks the positive side of the battery?

A friend seems to think it would be ok.

This is for a 66 mustang coupe with a 289.

The battery has the normal postive & ground on top hooked up & then the extra wires on the front of the battery.

It seems to me that it was hooked to the starter relay/solenoid for a reason....

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
