timing for 302

Hi
I was hoping someone had some tips on timing and tuning a 1971 302 engine. This is in my 1966 mustang.I have an edelbrock torker 289 intake and a 1406 600cfm edelbrock carb on this car. Looks like vacuum advance hooked up to wronge vacuum port on the carb .It seems to be on the timed port vacuum (the left port)instead of the manifold vacuum port (the right one) ..idles very rough..when I change the ports it idles better without any other adjustment. How should I go about doing the timing etc ...any sites to help me or would any one be an expert out there
Thx

When you set the timing, both should be plugged. Reconnect the hoses after you are finished.

My suggestion is about 12-13 initial advance with the vacuum ports plugged and about 35-36 total, all in by 3000 RPM. Then reconnect the vacuum line. Not sure which port on your distributor. Try each one and see how it performs. My guess would be the timed port.

one of them could also be for hooking up a vaccum guage to get her really dialed.
