Default Timing Cover Problem

Need advice here on my 71 351C: I took the timing cover off since I'm replacing the water pump. I noticed one of the 2 holes for the water pump bolts is stripped and wondering if it is okay to weld a nut over the stripped hole. Other option is to buy a new cover, but I don't know who sells them.

How can you tell if the timing chain is good or worn? Mine seems tight and clean.
