Pull the number one plug out. Stick your finger in the plug hole and bump the engine over. * DO NOT START THE ENGINE* Have a friend bump it and remove the coil wire so it dont start.

When the engine starts to suck in your finger its on the intake stroke #1 piston going down. When it comes up for the power stroke your at TDC. ( Fix pointer) Undue the distributor cap, the rotor should be pointing at the terminal for the #1 plug wire. (marked on most dist caps.) If the rotor is pointing somewhere else repeat bumping it over to make sure. If the rotor is still off, pull out the dist and turn rotor/shaft until it point at #1 on the cap.

TDC is when the #1 piston is at a dead stop. 40 degrees sounds a little harsh. Who ever built the motor should have the cam specs and have degreed it in when it was built.
