timing marks on a 69

I have a 69'coupe with a 351 in addition to the 87 and I was wondering how the he11 you set the timing as there are no timing marks on the balancer.

There should be a mark on the balancer, but it could be under some dirt and grime. If not then you need to pull the #1 plug and rotate the engine till you find the compression stroke. If you can rotate it by hand, stick a straw or something similar and feel when the piston is at the top and make your mark.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DROPPED DOWN INSIDE THE CYLINDER!

Once you get this close most people time by ear and a road test to get it just right.

I agree with clark try usind just a little paint stripper with a Q-tip ( after you finde T.D.C) on the balancer to reveal the marks . the groves / marks arnt very deep so dirt, grease,or toomuch paint will hide them.

oops.. one more thing. Acool tric afterm its all said an done try remarkind the marks with a fine tip paint pen(white) touch up raint, white out ect. then give it a short blast of clearcoat. Now you will never lose those marks & your timeing light will make the lines clear as day forever.
