Default Timing and waterpump dilema?

Ok, Picked up a rebuilt 65' 289 Clevland with 302 heads. The timing chain cover on it did not have a timing pointer but came with on that was detached. I looked at pictures and figured out where to put it but here comes my problem. If I install the timing pointer the pointer is covered up by the waterpump outlet. Is there a certain year waterpump I can use to move the outlet from the right side to the left side of the enginie or can I just do the timing by vaccum readings?
