Trans help
 

I just bought a 65 coupe as a present for my dad, and I need some advice on transmissions. the car has a 302 in it with what i believe is the stock 3 speed that came with the 289 the car had originally.I dont think the fit is right. the clutch doesnt feel right even after trying to adjust it. A freind suggested a 4 speed munsi transmission would their be any problems with that? or is there something else thats been missed?

hey if what ur asking is the tranny not bolting up, the 302 and the 289 have the same bolt pattern

so the original trans should be working correctly with the "new" motor and its maybe in the clutch?

yea mabey the clutch or pilot bearing whats the problem ur having?

From what I've heard early v8 mustangs had 5 bolt bellhousings, later ones came with the 6. (something like that, early ones had one less) Though im not sure if the early ones are still compatible with later engines or not. If its bolted up though it should be good to go. What doesnt feel right? How far out do you have to let the clutch out for it to engage? No reason a 3spd shouldnt work, thats what im running right now. I can never remember which way it needs to be adjusted to get it to engage sooner/later, what I do when im adjusting my clutch is just go to one extreme and see what that does, then to the other, then go from there. I like to make my clutch engage fairly quickly.

The clutch does release/engage way to high for my taste, and feels kinda stiff, maybe im just use to the hydralic type. It also has a hard time going into second (just second) unless the clutch is all the way to the floor.

They are definately harder to push than a hydraulic systems, but it can be adjusted so it doesnt release so high. Like I said, it can go from either extreme. Adjust it by that rod that comes out of the firewall below/to the right of the master cylinder. (threaded, then a bar thing on that inbetween two nuts) I cant remember which way will make it engage sooner, so you'll have to experiment with that. If you cant figure out what im talking about, I might be digging the snow out from infront of my Mustangs storage shed to take it out, so perhaps I could take a picture of it. Probably the easiest way to figure out what you need to adjust is just look in the engine bay while somebody pumps the clutch pedal. Good luck.
