Default Transmission Trouble

65 Mustang, 4 speed manual. I have been experiencing some difficulty shifting so I decided to replace some parts to solidify that area. My first problem is that I cannot downshift from 4 to 3 without reving the engine. I realize this is a bad synchro and I will address that over the winter months. The second problem was a very sloppy and hard to use shifter. I first replaced the control assembly and then ordered a shift lever rebuild kit since I was missing a few parts where the lever connects to the control assembly. I have not received the kit yet, but hope it will help.

I also ordered new linkage rods. This is where my problem is. The linkage rods I got from National Parts Depot do not match up to the existing rods on the car. I have done some checking and firmly believe that the new rods are correct. Has anyone else experienced an issue like this? How do I know if my car has the correct transmission? Are there numbers on the transmission?

The question I would ask is do you have a Ford top loader 4 speed or a Borg and Warner T10 4 speed. Both were used. If you are certain of which transmission you have I would call NPD and make sure you got the rods for the correct transmission.

thunderbolt, Thanks for the response. I do not know exactly what transmission I have other than it is a 4sp. Do you have any pointers on how I would find out?

Cool

if the trans has a side cover it is a T10, if a top cover it is a top loader. the top loader is the desireable one for strength, but the T10 is lighter(that is why shelby used it in the gt350's).
