Transmission Trouble
I have a 78 Mustang II with a 302, 4-spd. Everything is stock. Can anyone explain why the thing slips out of 2nd gear every time I let off on the gas? As long as I'm accellerating, it stays in gear. Please help!!!

Very most likely the synchronizer ring on that
gear is going out. That means removing the trans and taking apart. Not NEARLY as tough or complicated as working on an auto, though, and can be easily done at home by someone who's worked on any manual car trans. Basically unbolt the front snout and rear bearing carrier from the case, take off the shifter cover & shift forks with it, and everything pretty much slides out one end or the other. Swap synchros, and reverse your disassembly procedure. |
the last reply is right on track, though it could be excessive mainshaft-end play, epecially if it has high miles.it could have worn shift forks or a culmination of things.i would probably rebuild the whole thing or put a rebuilt one in instead of just trying to patch it up
