trouble running vin#

having trouble running the vin numbers off an early convertable, I need to know exactly what this car is, since the 64's had generators (this does) but everything points to it being a 65.. heres the # 5f08c738661 Also I wanna know how many cars were produced between 64 and 65 since they continued the #'s for both years? Thanks

I will tell you what I can:
5=last digit of model year(1965)
F=assembly plant (Dearborn,Mich)
08=body code (convertible)
C= engine code (289-2V)
738661= consecutive unit number
The problem I see with this being a 64 1/2 is the engine code, the code should be a D-289-4V ,F-260-2V,K-289-4V Hipo or U-170-1V. The letter C would point to this car being a 1965.

Right, Thats what gets me, but also there is nothing stated about the early ones haveing the smaller engines also, nor the fact of people coming in and saying "I want this engine, but this rear end" this is what is leading me to think it is a "test" car where they used this engine/tranny, and put this rear into it to see if it would work.. how many were produced from 64 to end of year 65??

Your consecutive unit number is way to high to be a "64 1/2" car. Mine was built in April 1965 (289-4V, convert) and it is a fair bit lower. Your car is a "1965". I put the the years in quotes because all of these cars were treated as 1965's by Ford.

The best thing to do is check the date code on this. Anything higher than 17H is considered a "65". Mine's a 641/2 with the build date of 23F. The letters stand for the month C is Mar 64, D is Apr 64, E is May 64, down through M as Dec 64, then A is Jan 65, B Feb 65, then Q for Mar 65 down through Z for Dec 65 (skip I and O).

Looking at the VIN, you probably have a very late 65 that someone tossed a generator in. They made 680,989 for the 65 model year (including 641/2). Since Mustang number 1 had consecutive unit number (the last six digits) 100001, that would mean the very last 65 would be 780989. My 641/2 built in June of 64 has unit number 175682.
