trying to find out matching car
 

hey guys, i need help, i'm new to the board. i'm goign to look at this car tomorrow. he says it's a real 1966 GT mustang A code. I want to know how i can tell that the engine and transmission match the car? is there a link i can go to that will help me identify what the engine should look like, where the id tags are (on both the engine and tranny) Let me know. i really dont want to find out that this car is a mis matched car. thanks guys.

Well according to the trusty haynes, the number for all made prior to '68 will be on the left side of the block, and the tranny tag should be rivited on the right side of the transmission casing.

where exactly is it located on teh block, will i have to go under the car to check it out? and how far down is the tag on the tranny. I have a book i just purchased that tells me how to read teh tags, but my prolbme is finding the tags. are they casted? or just screwed on? thanks.

The VIN is stamped just inside the hood on the driver side fender apron in front of the shock towers. The A code should be in that. That won't tell you the car is a GT, but if it is anything but an A or K code it will tell you it is not. There was no special designation for a GT in 1966, just the engine code. Also check the data plate on the door jamb at the back of the driver's door, it will tell you the original specs of the car unless the door has been replaced and the tag doesn't match. The number on the engine block and transmission do not match the VIN, but they do have casting numbers that tell the date built, both should begin in C6, the C being the decade of the 60's and the 6 meaning they year 66. Most 66 Mustangs have had the engine replaced at some point, but not all. While you are looking at it, check the floor pans and behind the wheels for rust or rust repair, also look inside the trunk, under the trunk mat, early Mustangs were prone to rust in those areas. As Harold said above. There isn't any matching serial numbers on the engine and transmission. The casting number with the C6XX on it is near the starter and not easily viewed.

The vin on the left fender apron also might not be visible. Two reasons--[1] you have to loosen left fender and pull it out some to see it. Not all the time. [2] the apron has be changed/repaired and the number is gone. All GT's in 1966 had to have a 4V. So it has to be "A" or "K" to be a GT. But, just because it has engine A or K doesn't mean it was a GT. Also, many GT's were fab'd at the dealership. Also, in todays market many standards are converted to GT's to sell better. But, vin won't help you there.
