trying to keep my cool.
 

for a long time now iv had an overheating problem.

everything is new.

new water pump. new t stat.
new hoses new radiator.4 core
all gaskets and seals are good
new coolant
motor runs great.


problem is my motor warms up. and get to 170 or so where my t stat is. stays there for about 3 or 4 minutes. then slowly builds.
and in about 5-10 minutes it will be at 230. this is while driving freeway at about 3500-4000 rpm.

i let it idle in the driveway for a while with the radiator cap off and it seemed be a little better. i could see the coolant flowing good from left to right.

if i drive streets same thing happens it just does not warm up as quick.

also if i let the motor idle in the driveway it will do the same thing.
just does not overheat as fast.

i have an electric fan. unknown type came with my car.
thought that might be my problem so i changed it out with a solid mechanical fan and put the fan shroud it. still get to about 210. driving or idleing.

the only way i can get it to cool down is if im driving on the freeway i get up to about 85 or so and put the car in neutral and let the rpms come down to idle. then i can see the temp guage drop (autometer mechanical, also new) fast about 20 degrees before i have to go back into gear because im going too slow.

is it normal for my car to run this high?
iv tried just about everything and nowthing seems to matter.
also tried watter wetter.

i really need your help on this one guys. any one else had this problem?? ill try just about anything at this point.

First, get rid of the 170 T.

I found out that a 180, or 195 was better. The lower the T the worse it gets.

Also, I use that extra cooler stuff u see in a small bottle, it really works. It should try to over heat once, then somehow that stuff activates. It worked on my '66.


I can't remember the names, but one is a green fluid, clear bottle, and redline makes the red fluid, clear bottle.

It also sounds like your coolant is flowing too fast and isn't in the radiator long enough to cool down. If the new t-stat doesn't work, try a restrictor instead. I have cooling probs when going down the freeway too and I have a 180 t-stat. On the streets and idle, all day long, and in any heat it will run at 170.

Make sure you burp all the air out of the system. And your using a overflow tank.

I have massive air pockets form in the Cobra. I squeeze the upper and lower hoses (car off) Lift off cap and add. I have added up to 1/2 a gallon doing this.
