![]() ok so this is my first post here so please bear with me. i have a 67 mustang with a 289 motor its old and tired and i am going to rebuild it. i know how to do all of that but im not the greatest with all of the numbers like ratios compresions and stuff like that. i would like to upgrade from the 289 to a 302 possibly the boss. i would like to just bore it out and ad the nesicary parts rather than buy another motor.
i am hoping that some one will be able to help me out with this an give me some info on if this is possible i was told it was but the more gouge i can get the better. i have also done a bit of research and it looks possible besides new pistions and having to bore it out some. is this true? also it seem that its not that big off a jump from the 289 to a 302. would it be better to just rebuild the 289 insted of doing the up grade. and if so what can i do to give it more power? thanks for the help an hopefully some one can help. |

![]() I don't know what your money is like but a boss 302 block is expensive and hard to find. You can order a newer roller 302 block from one of about a thousand different places and alot cheaper. One advantage to the 302 is you can get 347 ci out of it and tell everyone it is just a standard 289. They look the same on the outside.
yes you can upgrade the 289 very easily? Is it a 2v or a 4v?

![]() The 4-V carb will have 4 holes vs. 2 holes when you look down the carb.
You are going to have to get involved with a machine shop for the rebuild. Trust me and them that you will need help on this. Going form the 289 to a 302 is easy. You will need a new crank. rods and pistons, but you needed that anyways, most probably. The 289 block will need some relief grinding at the bottom of the cylinders to accept the 302 crank. No big deal there. Don't even consider the Boss components. They are collectors items and even if you can, you won't want to pay for them. You can beat all that anyway for much less $$$. What you want to do is get with an honest machine shop, tell them what you are after, and then take their advice with you doing as much of the assembly as possible. Most shops do that all the time. Getting 1-1.2 horse power/ cubic inch in a street engine is everyday work for a decent shop. More is going to cost a bunch of $$$. Again, my advice is to find an honest and capable machine shop to help guide you through this. I'm not saying my car is anything special, but you can click on the link to user's rides to see what I did for a minimal $$$ street engine and then check out many other faster and more powerful cars (more $$$ too) such as stangflyer's "death machine".
