Default what do I have

hello me again-

now forgive me for this not being A mustang question but I am sure someone here will know.

ok I went and picked up an engine today. but am not sure of what it is. one person was saying it was A 289 and came from A 64 ranchero. the other person said it was A 260 and came form A 64 fairlane wagon. so I figured I would look up the serial number but can't find it. does any one know where it is located on the block.

thanks

Can't help on the numbers, but if you pull a cylinder head you can check the engine bore, but use a caliper. 289 is a 4.0 inch bore. 260 is smaller but I can't remember by how much. Does the motor still have the original intake? I am not an expert, but don't recall the 289's before 65 coming in 2 bbl configuration, nor a 260 coming in 4 bbl but I could easily be wrong about that.

well after going back and forth alot. and reading alot.I still do not know what I have.I could not find A caliper. but just cuz I was board I used A tap measure(dont laugh) and it was just under 4 inches. but I know it might not be acurate. any ways. I finally found the engine code on the block. but several people have told me different things. so here is the code. what do you guys think.

C40E-60158

again this is off of the block. not the car. every book I have read keeps saying find the number on the car. but I dont have the car.

If its under 4 inches for sure, then its a 260, that casting date alos sounds really early for a 289, Best bet is get those calipers and get a real number, just guessing till then.

Good calipers are expensive >$200, check out http://www.penntoolco.com

I think Sears sells a plastic caliper that is good enough for rough measurements (to the tenth of an inch, not the thousanths).

Most auto stores carry them realatively cheap. I got mine from autozone for under 15.00.

Rev go to tool club on harwin they have them there cheap.

Well you probaly have figured out by now you a a 64 block by the numbers. Now as far as production numbers go it is more then likely a 260 but that is a guess based on production numbers not actually looking at it. I have some possibly really bad news for you though that motor will not bolt up to your 68 tranny. They changed bellhousing from a 5 bolt to a 6 bolt in 65 and the old 5 bolt parts get a little harder to find everyyear not to mention i know of no one who makes any really strong auto transmissions or an SFI bellhousing if you wanted to go with a standard for the 5 bolt blocks.

well I dont got 200$ for A caliper. but I think one that messures to the tenth of an inch should do fine for now.

actually A transmision came with it. so I am set on that. but would it hook up to A regular drive shaft. I am not going to put it in any thing later then 66.

the only thing is the trans looks like A 2 speed automatic. at first I thought it was 3 speed but now I dont think so. but I have never heard of A ford 2 speed trans. did they make one.

thanks

The tranny is more than likely a 24 spline C-4 with the green dot vavle body. At least that was the most common back then. To my knowledge there is no ford 2 speed for passenger cars. What makes you think it is a 2 speed if it is the shift detents then that would just confirm the green dot valve body. I hate that valve body but I have met a few people that liked it(the shift pattern for it is PRND2 there is no provision to manually put it in and hold 1st gear). Last but not least the driveshaft is not anything special it is just a driveshaft annd any of the yolks from any of the small block trannys but a C-6 will fit it and overall length is the same as a 68 small block and C-4 combo.

so what your saying is that the 2 is actually 1st and 2nd gear. it shifts automaticly from 1st to 2nd. then I shift it manually to drive.

thanks

Unfortunately no the 2 is 2nd and 3rd only and d is 1st 2nd 3rd... ford claimed in inclement weather you could then start out in 2nd to promote better traction. What I had to do in an fairlane i used to have was launch in d let it shift to 2nd then to hold second i would then put the shifter into 2 and then back to d for the shift to 3rd(although with that valve body it would automaticly shift to 3rd around 95ish which with the 289 that was in that car was just a little late) . The only contrtol you have over the 1-2 shift is to adjust you vacumn modulater and make sure you downshift linkage is adjusted properly.

I have a 289 out of a 64 fairlane, and you can find the number right behind the starter. You will have to unbolt the starter but the cast number should be there. Good luck.

just so you know... the 260's and early 289's have a 5 bolt bellhousing instead of the 6 bolt like the later cars.. so you might have problems if you ever decide to swap tranny's...

yea I'm aware of that. at first some guy told me only the 260's hade the 5 bolt bellhousing. then later I found out that some of the 289's did to. it keeps going back and forth. but I am preaty sure it is A 260.

BTW, the 260 bore is 3.80..
if you have the heads off, you can also measure the intake valve..
the 260 has a 1.67 intake valve, the 289 has a 1.78 valve..
