what radiator ?

I need a radiator for 65 w/ a 408 w/ around 450 hp. What one would you all go with?

Kisner 06-20-2002 11:01 AM

I'd personally go with a 4-row 24-inch. Cheapest I found was at Autozone.

I was thinking of griffin or be cool is the auto zone one better?

With 408 CID and 450 HP, I think you are gonna need all the high tech al. radiator (translates to expensive) you can get.

I barely get by with a 4 row brass radiator in my '66 with a 335 HP 306, Edelbrock water pump, Shelby front valance, and an auxillary electric pusher fan in addition to a mechanically driven 5 bladed flex fan.

So do you think the Griffin 22" will keep it cool. I will have a CSI electric water pump , Mark 8 electric fan that puts out 5000cfm and a Shelby front valance w/ the spoiler.

The Griffin universal that Summit sells will do fine. I just put one in my 69. Mine is an Afco, but is just about identical to the Griffin.
Afco:

I used a 26"X19" in my 69 and had to cut the edges of the core support a little. Stock was 24" wide. A 22X19 should be a bolt in for you. Just have to make some brackets as these are "universal radiators.

You have two choices for outlets. Chevy style has the bottom hose on the passenger side and top on the driver's side. Ford and Mopar is reversed with the btoom hose ont he driver's side. 69 and earlier Mustangs have the bottom hose on the passenger side and will need the Chevy style radiator. You will also need new hoses to match the new locations. For the top hose I used a hose for a 70 Bronco with a 302. Fit perfect. The Bottom hose is Auto Zone # 103. Don't knwo the application. Just went through their hoses until I found one that worked.

It cools great. Made about a 15° temp difference vs a 3 core copper/brass.

thanks for the help Dave and nice 69.

Tinner, the reason i didn't reply further is because I have no actual experience with the high fin count Al. radiators. All that I know about them is theoretical, and second hand . They should work alot better and they definitely cost a lot more. That's all I really know.
