wheel suggestions?
I'm planning some fairly serious suspension work in the next 6-9 months, and am still debating what wheel to go for (disc brake conversion), I'm looking at the classic torque-thrusts, and a couple of the style steel repo's in a larger size, but was wondering if anyone had any rim suggestions to offer.
I'm not really interested in the shelby wheels, or the late model wheels since they would need an adaptor. (Adaptor Bad! :p ) Basically I'm trolling for rim ideas. Also, what would be a good rim/tire size to go for? I like 16's+, but want to keep the tires within the stock-no rub perameters, and I dont want to have to redesign my suspension to accomidate them. The rebuild I'm looking at involves about a 1" drop to the front, and either a 1-1 1/2 drop rear. Currently I have 14'" style steel wheels, w/ 235/60/14 tires. Ideas? J |
Any pics of what it looks like at the moment?

Nice stang.
i thought about making tha stang look like the 68 version of the 69 428 boss, with white steel wheels and hub caps. |
I like the Torque Thrust's also. You can get them in 16"s. If you want that look but bigger Ford makes those Cobra 5 spokes in a 17".I believe the biggest you can run on early Stangs , without too much backspacing, is 16 anyway. They do sell smaller inner shock tower braces, those things that cover the springs. So that you can run wider tires without interference while turning. I like the disc brake conversion kits, can'twait to do mine! Remeber the bigger the wheel, the bigger the brakes you can go with. If you're making serious ponies you'll need those oversize rotors! Good Luck

My only gripe with the torque thrusts is that it seems like everyone has them. I may end up going with them or Crager s like the quik trick 1's or outlaws (I think).
Dunno, still thinking,lol. J |
I am currently trying to order the rims I wanted. But now the company's website is down and the phone number gets an automated message that says the line is down for testing.
This company offered I believe a 16X8 bullit look alike, they said was built with the proper backspacing (4 3/4 inches on the back I think, but I can not remember if the front is different). I have found atleast one other company that says they offer the same rim in the 16X7 version, can let u know what I find out. My car had 14 inch aluminum rims with a 60's tire, but they got bent in the wreck last fall, dont really look good with the car's paint job, and I hate 14's anyway. Hopefully hobgoblin351 can ad to this a little more, cause I am learning as I go with the wheels. I can tell you mine is lowered also, and the paint is perfect, which rules out rolling the fender lips. When I get them, if they work...I will let you know. Ryan |
try this, although according to it, it states the backspacing should be 4 1/2 for the rear and 4 1/4 in the front. I for some reason thought the rear is suppose to be a little more.

cool article, thanks for the info:)

just got done speaking with performance wheel outlet, they swear I can fit the 16X8 bullit rim they have with no clearance problems. Great price on the rims too. He said the rims have 4.5 inch backspacing.
If anyone disagrees with this, please tell me now!!, cause I am going to order them next week if not. Ryan |
Hey rwhite, that was the same Carcraft article I was going to tell you to look up. Ha ha, I guess great minds think alike. Those 8" wides should give you plenty of traction to corner with. Now concentrate on stiffening up the chassis.
