Default Where do I mount the Timing Mark on 302?

A stupid question, I know. But the last owner never had a timing mark installed on the engine. My timing is shot to hell and I want to get it done right this time. I have a 302 engine. I know it goes up front, on one side of the pulley, mounted on the block somewhere?. Can somebody give me VERY specific instructions on where to mount it? Even the shop manual explaination on the timing procedure leave it up to the imagination. As always, advice is repayable by beer. I apologize for my ignorance.

Thanks alot guys/gals.

Little hard to see because although this guy did an incredible job with the asthetics on this engine, he didn't do much in the way of contrast.

If you follow the fuel pump on the pic to the waterpump neck... follow the neck "northwest" and you will see the timing marker coming off of the timing cover. It is at about 1 o'clock on the crank pulley.

mine is on the left side (looking at the engine from the front) connected by two bolts for the timing chain cover. Its a 79' 302.

Later models and 5.0s did put them on the left side... this one looks rusty and sits around 10 o'clock:

So which marks do you use to set the timing with a timing light? I dont think there are any marks on my pulley. I see a faintly etched "1" on the pulley but thats it. I bought an after market timing mark from Schucks that has a adjustable point. Any ideas on how this should be correctly installed? Also, is there a problem with installing a timing mark after an engine is assembled, or is bolting one on now not going to be a problem. Thanks alot guys, I really appreciate it!

I would think that with an adjustible one you would want to get a piston stop, pretty much a thing that threads into the sparkplug hole. Rotate the engine over slowly until it hits that, then adjust it.

You are definately gonna want to find top dead center if you use an adjustable mark, a couple of different ways to do that. Let us know what you decide to go with.
