Where To Find Engine Tags

I RECENTLY A 1966 COUPE WITH A 289 WITH EDLEBROCK 4 V INSTALLED ON IT...iT APPEARS THAT i DO NOT HAVE A 289 BUT RATHER A 302 OR A 351...THE WATER PUMP INLET IS DOWN TO THE DRIVERS SIDE AS IN A 1970 302 ..THE TAG IS SUPPOSED TO BE NEAR THE COIL ON THE FRONT OF THE BLOCK BUT IT ISNT...WOULD ANYONE BE ABLE TO TELL ME HOW i CAN IDENTIFY MY ENGINE EASILY? OR DOES ANYONE KNOW A SITE THAT I COULD FIND INFO

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

How about pulling the valve cover?

So long as the gunk isn't built up so much that the casting marks aren't visible, there should be a some marks on the head... a "289"..."302"... "2V".... "4V"...

If you have to scrape any gunk away, be sure that it doesn't fall down the oil holes... might be a good idea to stuff them before you start scraping around..

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

Just thought of something else...

I think that early 289s only had 3 bolts hold the pulley to the crankshaft... while by 68, they had 4...

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

Well I have some info...The edelbrock intake says TORKER 289..the Edelbrock carb says 1406 and 0521......the head inside the valve cover says 302 and 1A15. so it looks like I have a 302 with a 600cfm carb...Is there any way to find what year the engine might be? It also says weber on side of carb

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

That's big intake for most set ups...

at least you know that the heads are from a 302.

http://www.mustangmonthly.com/howto/5801/index4.html

Looks like a head casted on Jan. 15 1971.

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

MMMMMMMM Thank you..So if it was casted on Jan 15 1971 It is probably a 1971 302. Yes I agree 650 cfm does seem big....What might I experience because of this?
THanks for the link...where might the clock they talk about be on the block

Phillyfanfrombirth 01-27-2005 02:29 PM

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

I never knew what that clock was for... I think it is right there on the head, as well... Should be a circle that looks like a clock. Not sure where it would be on the block.

a 650 probably won't be that big of a deal, I was talking more of the Torker intake... if I remember right, that is a single plane manifold that starts at 2500 or more RPMS. You would gain more bottom end power and torque by stepping down to a Performer, or Performer RPM dual plan manifold. Unless you have a nice stall converter, plenty of upgrades in the engine, full dual exhaust w/ headers.... you shouldn't be seeing 6k and 7k on your tach, which is where the torker starts to really show its "manhood"...

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

ohhhhhhhhh ..I wonder what the previous owner was thinking? No idea if there is a stall converter ...will have to check .It does have dual exhaust no H pipe...no headers just the cast iron manifolds .....so the intake might be too much????
thank you for your comments

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

Stock converters... stock trannies... and stock rear gears are a certain no-no if you are running a single plane manifold. Especially if you still have the stock exhaust.

Maybe he/she got a good deal at a swap meet...

Re: Where To Find Engine Tags

Maybe....I will have to look into this further...the exhaust is not stock ....8 inch rear but thats all I know...tranny mounts have been reinforced but might be stock tranny.
hope he did something right.
