Who knows about rear-end gears?

right now my 69's 302 is putting out far more power than my rear end can handle. it has been modified to get between 425 and 450 hp. however, i am not getting this to the rear wheels due to my gears. i was curious if anyone can help as to what the best set of gears would be fro my application.

Not getting it to the rear wheels meaning traction issues? Can you explain a little more?

#1 what gears do you have now? #2 is it auto or std? #3 is it a 9 inch? #4 what do you have in a 302 that is making 425 hp on pump gas?

69' stang- the previous owner of the car left the stock gears in the rear end but built up the engine, i want to upgrade the gears to get the horses the motor is making to the rear wheels. it is a ford 9 in. i dont know the ratio of the current gears. a mechanic that is helping me on the project suggested 3.80 but i would like a second opinion

This is pretty much what you are gonna hear on this board.
An auto usually the 3.80, a manual would get a 4.10 ratio.

Personally, if it were my car and I was not gonna see a lot of highway miles, I would go higher with the 4.10 whether the car was amanual or auto.

If your engine makes a lot of power, but you only have a 3 speed auto or an older 4 speed stick, you could probably get by with the 3.80 and still have a decent cruising rpm.

also if you run a low profile tire or wheels 3.80's are gonna be low too.need to factor in your overall tire or wheel size also. 3.73's are pretty good if you run a 15 inch wheel with a tall tire..
