Thumbs down blew a head gasket on a '93 sable

I posted this on the 5 liter board, but I think you guys would have some input too:

have what looks like a blown head gasket on my
mom's '93 sable. Its a 3.8L V6
with 100K miles on it. The car idles rough and spits out
white smoke that smells like
coolant. How ever there is no coolant in the oil or oil in
the coolant. The mechanic
wants to resurface the heads and put on new head
gaskets from pep boys... does
the head resurfacing sound like its needed? How
common is this problem and would
new gaskets be a perminant fix? Also should new FORD
gaskets be bought? I hear
they have a new design that fixes this problem?!?
Thanks for any info!
