It's really pretty simple.
1) Start engine, warm it up.
2) Connect the timing light to #1 cylinder.
3) Pull the plug out of the SPOUT connector - it's hanging in the harness that plugs into the front of your distributor.
4) Loosen the 1/2" bolt that at the base of your distributor that locks it in place.
5) Point the timing light down at the left side of the harmonic balancer and turn the distributor clockwise to advance, counter-clockwise to retard, until the timing pointer lines up with the marks on the balancer that indicate 14. Each mark is two degrees, so two marks to the right of the "10" would be 14. You might have to clean and mark the point before starting all this if your marks are dirty or rusted.
6) Disconnect the timing light, plug the SPOUT connector back in and drive it. If it pings, back it off a degree at a time till it stops.

Uh....yeah and what ever you do DON'T PUT THE 3rd CLAMP FROM THE TIMING LIGHT ON THE COIL WIRE! Some bone head posted here and he did just that. Jeez. Some people just are not fit to breed.
