First track times ever, pathetic or respectable?

I went out to the track's test and tune last night, preparing for friday. It was my first time. On both passes, I spun bad, the track is much slipperier than asphalt! First pass: .900 Rt, 2.668 60ft, 10.368 1/8@ 71.51mph, 15.781 1/4@ 90.76mph. Second pass: .940 Rt, 2.502 60', 10.125 1/8@ 72.1mph, 15.538 1/4@ 90.97mph. Is this respectable? What track times should I expect?

not bad for a first time!
work on launching without tire spin and the times should drop. MPH seems a little low, so your shift points need adjusting, too.

btw it is respectable that you are even there!

Times look pretty good there! Get out there and get comfortable with what you're doing and then you'll notice the ET's coming down. Main thing, HAVE FUN!!!

looks good for the 1st time..take awhile to get used to taking off the line..but once you're comfortable racing the car, you shouls see times in the mid 14's at 97 or so MPH..
FWIW, try taking off on the last yellow instead of the green light.. it wont help the ET, but the R/T will be lower..
what RPM did you shift at?

I'll agree. Work on getting the car out of the hole as quick as possible, but without spinning the tires. Sounds easy doesn't it? Unfortunately its not unless you slap some slicks on it. It'll take some practice at finessing the right amount of throttle and clutch but it is possible. Everything you can knock off the 60' will be nearly doubled at the big end. Also work on getting >>really quick<< shifts. Good, quick, clean powershifting can be worth several tenths in the quarter.

I was shifting at 5500 rpm. I was told that was too high, so I tried 4000 on one pass and that really stunk! Friday night, I got my best et at 15.39 @ 91 mph, that was a 1.09 rt. The actual race I ran a .560 rt, 15.560 @ 92 mph. How can you have a better rt and higher mph, but a slower et?

R/T doesn't affect anything with the ET or MPH. It simply shows how much time passes from the green light to the time that your car breaks out of the beams. There's lots of things that will affect ET & MPH though. A lot of tire spin will usually show as a higher MPH but worse ET. That's because you're getting a running start of sorts towards the finish line. ET/MPH can also be affected quite a bit by where you stage in the beams. Shallow staging will result in quicker ETs & 60' but slower reaction times. Staging deep in the box will result in slower ETs but quicker R/T. Just try to be as consistent as possible in the way you make your runs and you'll be better able to compare the timeslips from run to run.

5500 isnt to high on a stock 4.6... on a 5.0, yes...you might even try a little higher.. I I know the 4 valve make the most HP at the higher RPMS...
also, what altitude are you at?

The altitude is 4425. Higher rpm's seem better, but it seems like everyone at the track had their opinion, and I finally just went with what felt right, which was around the 5500 rpm spot. I just wish it hadn't been the last race for the season (until April), I was just getting used to it! ; )

Don't get discouraged! The ET will come down with more "seat" time. Your losing a lot in the first 60 ft. A 0.1 sec reduction in the 60 ft time nets about 0.15 sec reduction in 1/4 mile ET. Good luck!

like I said, the 4.6 makes HP at higher RPM levels than a 5.0, thats why it does better when you shift it higher.. saw a 4.6 cobra run on a dyno, max HP was at 7000 RPM... soo...

come on down to Az.. heheh... at least one of the 2 tracks are open pretty much all year.. heheheh ;-)

I have a friend that has a stock 2001 Mustang GT and he ran 14.40's.. Not too bad... and he had 60' in the hight 2.1's... Not too bad... The 2000 v6 Mustang gets 15.70's all day long... Somethings wrong if youre getting 15.50's... My STOCK 98 GT got 14.94s 14.96 and a 15.15 out of the three runs I ever did with it. Your 60' is MESSED UP. Looks like you about stalled it or spun like CRAZY. Get the launch down and you'd be 14's somewhere...!
