What are 2001-2002 Cobras Running in the 1/4 Bone Stock?
Ordered up a 2002 cobra coupe, and have been curious what 2001-2002 cobras have been running in the quarter mile bone stock. How do they compare to a 2001 2002 WS6 Trans Am? As I understand it the WS6 will out-perform bone stock, but thats what decent mods are for. But like I said, bone stock for bone stock, what do the new cobras lay down with decent driving, and what are new WS6's making bone stock?

The last magazine article I read posted a 13.3s 1/4 mile for the '02 Cobra, which is right on par with what a good-running ram-air GM product runs.

two weeks ago at the track, there was a '99 and '01 Cobra. The '99 was pulling 14.1's all day w/ a best of 13.9. The '01 was mostly 13.8ish, w/ a best of 13.7. I am sure there is better times in those cars, but it seems the Cobra's are a real drivers car. You have to be able to launch real well (which is so very hard w/ the IRS) and bang the gears like a champ to get a 13.3. MM&FF likes to powershift too, while most people can't even do it.
Personally, I think stock vs stock you would have a tough time w/ a ram air LS1. Heck, last fall there was stock WS6 pulling 13.0's @ 107 w/ only 1000 miles on it and a non ram air T/A running 12.7@111 with only a muffler, bored out TB, shifter, and MAF w/ lid. Thats it. That is some serious MPH. ------------------ 1997 Thunderbird 4.6L: Dynomax cat-back, MN-12 perf. offroad downtubes and Y-pipe w/ Magnaflow resonator, 80mm MAF with cone filter, B&M trans cooler, Inject-Tech chip, MAC U/D pulleys, KVR front brake upgrade, SVO 70mm TB. 15.2 @ 91 w/ just chip and MAF. 14's next time to the track. Launching the 4.6 DOHC even with a live axle is a bit of an art, much less with an IRS. Motortrend (I think) pulled a 13.5 @ 105.xx. Car and Driver and Road and Track were a bit off that.
Quick and dirty after some practice and break in time there will probably be some guys running high 12s bone stock. Depending on the track and conditions and skill I'd except the "typical bone stock time" to be in the 13.3-13.5 range. Basically pretty darn quick once you get the launch down. It really depends on all sorts of factors, but the new Cobras seem to be on par with the Z28 and Trans-Ams. (The SS and WS6 are deffently cooler, but really not significantly faster) |
