fuel cell

I have a question on placement of a cell in a 91 lx hatchback. I would like to know what I need to do to make it legal as far as surrounding it with metal or if there is any brand out there that is kind of like a add on . Anything that I can get would be a graet help. Thanks

mustangs unlimited sells a drop in one, bolts up to everything including the filler neck, but it's around $600 ;-(

Check the NHRA rule book. I think there is a limitation (ET) at which the cell has to be separated from the passenger compartment. Some people drop them down into the spare tire well and use aluminum as the separation. Racecraft and some others sell an aluminum bulkhead that fits into the hatch area to provide the separation. I've got a 2000 rulebook around here somewhere so let me know if you can't find the explicit rules.

nhra requires a firewall seperating the cell from driver compartment in all fuel cell apps. aluminum of thickness .032 or steel of thickness .025. it should be behind the rear seat and be sealed all around. also a ground wire must be mounted from a bolt on the cell to the body of the car.
cut out the spare tire well and place aluminum or steel there to make it flat. if you cut a hole for the sump to sit in then it must be covered on all sides by metal.
tech is very strict about fuel cells so be sure to do it right. also why do you want a fuel cell in your car?

I am looking to do a fuel cell in my car to make room for suspension work that I will be doing to do SCCA solo II racing. I want to install panhard bar, trac-link, and also looking for thoughts on moving exhaust for added space. Any ideas?? thanks

If you're going after a road race setup, then I'd check with some of the folks that do it best. See what Saleen, Steeda and Maximum Motorsports have to offer. They may be able to give you some ideas on how to move things around to clear them corner carving devices.
