Street Bandit
I was looking over the FFW site last night and checking out the classes, I have a friend that is dropping from Pro 5.0 to Street Renegade this year. I got to looking at what classes I would be interested in if I were so inclided. Now, I probably wouldn't do it but.. Street Bandit looks very interesting to me. No power adder and a 331 ci limit. This class looks perfect for the parts I already have. I was thinking a cheap 4banger notch with my sb, ported heads/intake, tranny, a better cam, cage, subframes and a strong rear axle and I wouldn't really need much else. What am I missing? How much more would I need to spend? I've never raced in any event besides bracket and I know there are some things I just don't know about. This sounds very interesting to me..
Thanks, Rick |

well it all goes back to how competitive you wanna be. If you wanna just run and say that you competed in it do what you mentioned but if you wanna get serious fork out some $$$$ I'm giving racing up this year because it's just too damn expensive. I broke 3 rocker arms over the weekend on my p.o.s. and i'm not gonna keep forking out money to blow the **** out of it. I'm eyeing on building a tube chassis 68 camaro for outlaw 10.5.

Bandit is a serious motor class, that's for sure. Guys like Richard Leltz, Chuck Simons, Andy Law and Cory Roth put serious time, effort and money into their rides. Going low 9's on SBF motor is no small feat. You're talking about spinning the motors to nearly 10,000 RPM to make the power. These guys are spending $20K on motors alone, and banging gears through $7K G-Force transmissions. Being competitive in this class isn't for the weak of heart or for the guy working on a budget. Its an exciting class to watch though. These guys will ride some monster wheelies out past the 100' mark.

Rick, if you read the rules again I think you'd see that 400 inch small blocks are allowed. Like Jeff said, this is a serious engine builders class. These guys make around 2 hp per cube and 650+ ft. lbs. of torque! Most run .900+ inch lift solid roller cams, heads that flow around 400 cfm, and they wing them over 10,000 rpm. I think the price tag for a competitive engine could total close to 40 grand. It is a very cool class to watch, and listen to!!
Eric, youre gonna give up racing because you broke a couple rocker arms? What happened to being dedicated to running a full season of Pro 5.0? Andy

Yeah I don't understand Eric. How in the hell did you break a couple of Jesel rockers???? I broke one once and it was pretty much a freak deal. Nonetheless it really wasn't that big of an expense to fix compared to other breaks.
It's too expensive but you're thinking of a tube chassis Camaro outlaw car? You would have had to have spent at least $40,000 to $50,000 on your current car and 3 weeks later you're selling? You're losing me dude. Are you sure you didn't get an early start on the New Years Party???

Well it's like this. The car is costing too much money to keep up and maintain. Maybe not sell it right now but just don't race. i'm absolutely broke. I can buy a buddies fully race ready tube chassied 68 camaro with a 632ci fulton motor on two stages for $55,000. He has much more invested than that. it's went 5.15 in the 1/8th on just one stage. Plus it's virtually maintenance free. I don't know this whole deal is getting on my nerves. Plus it's just a car to me. I don't get attached to cars very long.
