i did the summer job thing at a ford dealer.
i changed oil, tires (lots of firestones, yay) tranny fluid and filters, all basic stuff really because they couldnt trust me on large jobs because i have no work experience, but i still started at $9.00/hr the guys that did more involved mechanical work made quite a bit more than that, but they work on a flat rate system (kinda like commission) and each job they do is assigned a certain amount of hours that they get paid for no matter how long it takes to do it example: oil change= 0.4 hours hope this helps some ------------------ 88 Notch, B&M Ripper, 3.73's, Ported E7's, Explorer int. w/ ported lower, pulleys, 1.7RR's, BBK headers, off-road H-pipe, flowmasters, subframes, 65mm TB, March ram air ,MSD coil, U/L control arms, 155lph f/p, Crane Adj.FPR, Nitto drag radials, best 1/4--> 13.76@101.4 on a 2.17 60ft |

I'm an "apprentice technician" and becuase i have previous experience doing maintenance work and light repair at Firestone (for 1.5 years) i got hired on at $10.00. I'm in a 2 year co-operative program and at the end i should be making about $15 an hour flat rate when i start in the shop. Most guys who don't go to school make about $30,000-$40,000 full time. And ones with experience make $40,000-$100,000+. There's 3 guys in my shop that make over $100,000 a year and the average is about $60,000 for full time techs. This is, however, in a fairly well off area that it's easy to upsell work and there's also alot of warranty work as well that doesn't pay as well, but pays enough. Good luck on your career change. If you started at the bottom you'd probably make around $9 or $9.50.

I LOVE IT!!!! I'm going to be learning ALOT more than the independant technician co-operative class i was going to.
The way that it works is that i go to school from 7:00am to 1:30pm with a 5 minute, 20 minute and 40 minute break. Then i have to be at work at about 3:00 to 8:00 (the night shift). This goes from monday to friday, then i work every other saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. I'm making a decent amount of money, and it gets even better when i go to co-op. Co-operative time is when i will be applying what i learned in class. I will be teamed up with an experienced technician and work alot in the area i was trained and will also make ALOT of hours as well (i'm hourly so i'll be making over 40+ hours a week) and i'll also get alot of hands on experience to go with the book knowledge. I think it's a great program and they have these "FORD ASSET" programs all over the country as well. By the time i graduate, if everything goes as planned, shortly after graduation i will be an ASE Master certified technician as well as a FORD Master certified technician, which basically means i'll be making great money and it's also a recognized program all over the country and even to other dealerships (like foreign, european, chrysler, etc.) So basically you can almost be garaunteed that you'll be in high demand, even straight out of school. I hope this helped answer your question ------------------ Mustang Parts Specialties ripped me off, it could happen to you as well. '84 Mustang 5.0 LX my LX '89 Mustang GT my GT |
