Nope, a DOT certified or motorcycle helmet won't do. Both NHRA and IHRA rules require a minimum of a SNELL 95 or 98 rated helmet. I don't have a 2002 NHRA rulebook, but they may have even dropped the SNELL 95 by now. If your track doesn't check helmets, you might be able to get a DOT past the track officials but I wouldn't advise it. Do yourself a lifetime worth of favors and get a good quality SNELL helmet.
BTW: Make sure its the proper SNELL rating. There is a SNELL motorcycle (I think its something like 95M/98M) that isn't suitable for auto racing.
