Well I've been challenged by one of these monsters and I'm not too sure I can take him in the 1/4 on the street. His car is very big and heavy, but it's also pushing almost 400hp from the factory.

Any thoughts?

With your et, I think it will come down to who can get their car to hook better. Get in his head, and beat him out of the hole and he's yours.

At least he might be. Run him and let us know.

If that car is near stock you will have no problems beating him. Just get a good launch and you will win. Those old stock 440s are not really all that fast. My boss has a 440 in a old convertible and it runs 13.9 on slicks so you should be ok.

Hopefully we'll see. He's been talking trash to a friend of mine about how he can beat any car around. Well my friend told him that he knew somebody that'll race him (I didn't know anything about it until yesterday). All of this was happening while this guy was finishing his car. He just got it on the road last week. I really don't know any info about any modifications to his car, so I guess we're going to have to see what happens.

As a former owner of a 1970 440 Charger, I can maybe ease you'r dillema. The stock 440 Magnum was underated at 375 HP. But B-Bodies are very heavy (empty weight on my title said 3750). Unless other gear ratios are or were ordered they usually came with 323's.

Most came in automatic (727 Tourquflight) transmissions. Mine was basically bone stock and like every other big Mopar it was hella fast when rolling but did not seem like a worldbeater off of the line. I never took mine to the track and have nothing to go on but others I raced and seat of the pants but it seeemed like a low 14 second car possibly high 13's. Had a budy with a 71 Roadrunner and he ran high 13's and low 14's with a ton of wheelspin on radials. That seemed the norm for most big B-Bodies that were close to stock.

So if you take him out of the hole you should kill him with the times you'r car is putting down. The best part is win or loose it will be one helluva fun time

well I got some news tonight that's probably not good for me. He's got a 4 speed manual, drag radials, a big cam, bored .060 over with aftermarket pistons, however the crank and rods are stock. He may have more, but the guy setting this up didn't have know more info. I probably won't beat him, but it'll still be fun.

What Fox said.. ditto. A big cam means nothing if it's off from the rest of the combo. BB are a little more forgiving with combo mistakes I believe. Though I've mainly dealt with 340's. Have fun and always respect old muscle. Especially ones that sound mean and have primer as their primary body color. Please post results of this.

You are toast. While I own a 347 stang, I also own a 68 Charger R/T. I will quoate from the Carrol Shelby Speed Secrets book:

15 Second Bracket - If the car goes this slow, something is wrong. Check the weight - should be less than 4000lbs. Check axle ratio and ignition

14 Second Bracket - This repreents a stock 440-4 GTX, R/T

13 Second Bracket - This is representative of the production 440-6 bbl cars.

12 Second Bracket - Slightly bigger cam, elec fuel pump, bracket valve job

11 Second Bracket - Aftermarket heads, high comp pistons, mech cam

All these are with some chassis mods, but if hes runnin DRs and has motor work done I'm sure he has that covered. Also keep in mind that he can spool that motor up and use ALL the orque on launch where as most of us have to dance on the pedals to launch without spinnin.

Good Luck

Also, the 67 - 74 440 crank and rods are forged.

Question

Dude, I hope you win this race no problem! Try to find out more info from Mopar guys about this car. Any money on the line? 400hp sounds like B.S. Go to a Speed shop with a chassis dyno and get your car tuned. They should be able to help and give you some tips. Take EVERYTHING out of your car and practice your launches! It should be a good race. Don't forget to tell us how you make out.

Default 13.4/106/2.2?

With your times/trap, I would expect a better 60' time. Improve the launch and you will prevail. The old Mopar heavy muscle is fierce though. Don't under estimate him. Oh, how I love the old muscle cars.

Now i dont know about them "not launching hard" yea they are heavy, but your talking bb torque, my dad had a b-body coronet440 and said it had awesome out of the hole traction with cheeter slicks, and with the huge mech cam and ported heads, it had mad topend! enough to hold off plenty of bigblock chevys he shut out time after time.
regardless it would be fun to witness that race....good luck

Well I've got some bad news again. I found out today that he blew up his brand new motor. Apparently he didn't assemble it correctly, and his valves were slapping his pistons (he thought he just needed to adjust his rockers). It turns out that one of his pistons was installed backwards. His motor is toast. I don't know if he's going to fix it any time soon. If I find out something, I'll let ya know.
