340 Duster, can he beat me?
i don't know much about these cars. i looked it up on the net and it looks like an old muscle car. From what his girl friend says it's supposed to be pretty quick. But i don't know if it's a 5speed or automatic. he does have e.t. street tires on it. And i think it might be stock. His girlfriend sits next to me in my computer class, she said he wants to race me because his car is a "Stang killer". I plan on getting a GT-40 Intake and 3.73's within the next few weeks. Oh and as far as she knows, his engine is all stock he just got done rebuilding it. What do you guys think? I'm going to race him no matter what as soon as i get my intake and gears. but will that help me win or will he destroy me anyways?

If its stock i think it might be close, those cars never came with 5 Speeds, but the 340 is not really known for being a real power house, but anyway if you can launch you should be able to beat him.

There's only one way to find out! Good Luck!

good luck let us know how it turns out

A stang killer??? I say SMOKE EM. Get some vht for your tires take off your fan, if its not electric, set your base timing to 14. Unload all your books and spare tire and anything else you can do and go prepared to do battle.

BTW, i think he modded his engine during the rebuild. Stock tires would be good on a stock motor w an auto. Et streets are usually not put on till they're needed. ESP with an auto

Thanks for the info.
Thanks for your guy's input...i'll let you guys know how it goes, think i'm gonna race him next weekend. then i'll resurrect the post. tell you how i did.

The only way I see him beating you is if he's modded. If you get traction I can't see him waxing you given the weight difference of the two cars and stock HP of a 340cid. I do think you have to match his traction because I think this will be key. 84gt347 got it right, get ready for battle! Good luck!!

i suspect the duster owner hopped up the engine if they are the type interested in street racing/racing. it is the perfect opportunity to mod, and often times performance parts are better "value" than replacement parts on older cars the only way to tell is to run him. older cars aren't always predictable......i wouldn't be surprised to see the duster be a 15 second car, nor would i be surprised to learn it is an 11 second ride |
'70 340 Duster
According to one source that I have, the '70 340 Duster ran a 14.72 ET at 92.24 mph trap speed for the 1/4 mile. The source is an obsolete web site called Muscle Car Data Base. It was just a collection of magazine tests from when the cars were new. The Duster was 340/4speed with a 3.23 rear end. Advertised 275 hp @ 5000 and 340 lb./ft. @ 3200. Claimed a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds.
Remember those were gross hp figures then and bias belted tires. Hope this gives some insight. Rev |
I'd be carefull around those those "old muscle cars." A stock 340 duster is pretty quick, a modded one is fast. I think if the guy knows enough to put ET's on it, he's fast. Let us know. My money is on the Dodge.

Looking at your mods I think the duster will 0WN YOU!!
|
I'm with Dark 5.0 on this one. I've had buddies with mild modded 340 and they ran deep 8.0's in the 1/8th mile.
It'll be fun, but I wouldn't bet money on it if I were you. |

I have a few things to say here. I grew up around mopars until my Dad got an 87LX 5.0 then I started on stangs. But if there is one thing I do know, its that 340 dusters are quick. What year is it? 70 and 71's were the quickest by far.

Steed
Steed, i talked to my dad who used to race with his mustang and a bunch of his friends. He told me almost exactly what you just said. So i believe that he'll probably beat me but what the heck, i'll race him anyways.
|
Yeah, you never know until you try. You may spank him big time. He may be one of these basic rebuld guys that lowers the compression and all this other stuff. Good luck and let us know.
|
Stock?
He did specify mostly stock. I too am wondering why the MT streets, if it doesn't really need them? We all know about stuff added onto cars that isn't needed though. I'll bet some of us also know a little about fast Mopars from the 60-70's.

I also have owned and raced old mopars the average 340 in a duster is good for mid 14s with traction also depending on condition. Also mostly stock is different for everyone because we still have a mopar that we say is mostly stock which will run 12.8 on street tires and through exhaust so be carful. Even though I live and breath mustangs I still love driving the old musle
