Track or street race??
From 3.55's to 4.10's would be a good start. Drag radials would be nice, the only HP that counts is the HP you get to the ground. Dont be afraid of his car...If he cant drive he might as well be in a 96-98 GT........There is a 96 cobra that I smoke religiously every Saturday at the track. My car isnt that fast he just cant drive for nothin.....He runs consistent 14.78's @96. If your cars are equal in speed you have the advantage with an auto. What does your car run now??? His car is capable of a mid-high 13 @sealevel with a good driver. Good luck.

A 96 cobra with headers and exhaust is gonna be a hard running car. I'd guess 102 mph in the quarter, assuming he can drive, like dark said. Traction will be a big issue, drag radials and control arms would be a good investment. Exhaust will help you keep up on the top end as well. If you really wanna bruise him buy a little blue bottle to put in your trunk.

Didn't see you already had headers and a cat back, how bout an offroad H/X pipe, H would probably work better with the auto since you need all the torque you can get.
