02' Intake Silencer?
Hah! after giving all you modular guys a hard time about the baby cammer engine I went out and bought one
I've got an 02' GT and I've been playing around with it. First thing I did was pull the intake silencer which doesn't seem to be all that restrictive (at least compared to the old 5.0 silencers), and it looks like it seals the filter house from hot engine air at the very least? Has anybody verified that removing the silencer improved the power or does it pretty much amount to making more noise and nothing else? I'm guessimg that this thingy hasn't changed design int a while? A rearward facing trumpet with a body that increases size where it meets the window on the filter housing? |

A lot of people seem to agree that there is really no gain to be had with removing it (at least for street duty that is.) Although more air is available due to the bigger intake hole, it is now able to suck in hot air as opposed to cold air only.
One option you have is to cut the silencer. This allows it to still get cold air, while at the same time, opening up the hole a bit. To do this, just use a pen and trace around the opening while the silencer is installed. Then, remove it, and make your cut about 1/2" past that line, so the silencer extends just past the hole in the fenderwall. ------------------ 1997 Thunderbird 4.6L: Dynomax cat-back, MN-12 perf. offroad downtubes and Y-pipe w/ Magnaflow resonator, 80mm MAF with cone filter, B&M trans cooler, Inject-Tech chip, MAC U/D pulleys, KVR front brake upgrade. 15.2 @ 91 before exhaust & pulleys. I saw dyno results in MM&FF that showed a 2 or 3 hp loss from removing the intake silencer on a bone stock 99+ GT.

I tried that on my O1 GT for a little while. To tell you the truth I couldnt tell a difference at all in horsepower. The only change that i noticed was the tone of the car changed. Which didnt sound that bad.
