Biggest Race I've Ever Had. 440vs302
 

Well let me give you a little background on the situation. In this small town where no one knows how to build a motor correectly my car has been the fastest car in town for the past 2 years. Ive raced everyone and always won. Everyone thinks its way faster than it is, and they are always tryin to build something to beat me.

Anyways this highschool kid with a very rich family has a 440 GTX. His motor/trans cost 12,000 to get built! Its a stroked 440 with the whole edelbrock combo, heads,intake carb etc. The car was running 12.9@116 on street tires!

Anyways since we began setting up a race between us basically for bragging rights of the fastest car in town, his parents gave him 2,000 to try to beat me. Well this weekend he went 12.54@118 on street tires!

Now here comes the tricky part. He refuses to race me on N20, and insists that it is cheating. I saw I get 1hp of n20 for every cu in he has on me.

So should I race him all motor, we have identical times, but he has way more HP. Should I race him and spray an 80shot and just not say anything, or should I say **** you I'm running n20 don't be a little *****, and run 150 shot? Or should I try and do something to make my car faster all motor? But I dont have a lot of money.

Well, the way I see it, you have 2 options. Since you both have identical times without you spraying, option one would be to stay off the bottle, and simply try to out drive him.

Option 2 would of course be to spray him and beat his ***.

But then again, if this guy is as rich as you make him out to be, what's stopping him from buying an N20 kit for his ride? Then you might be in trouble. I say just tell him no nitrous, and beat him the fun way, by out driving him. Good luck!

What are the ground rules for the race? Obviously he doesn't want you to spray, but what else? Street tires only or are slicks allowed? Is it just one run, and winner takes all, or two out of three, etc?

The other thing to think about is this. If you beat him on motor, is he going to scream and say you sprayed on him anyway? The only way to keep that from happening is to take the bottle out in front of him and everyone else as witnesses.

Try to get the race on video. I know we'd all like to see it.

I assume his car is auto? you will kill that beast out of the hole, I do know how rowdy the BB mopar can be though,

I say race n/a, have your switch ready to arm if he starts pulling you....:D racin's chasin....on the topend noone will see if you blow bye him, and just deny that you sprayed....just race and post;)

Don't do anything. You already have the fatest car and have proved it time and again. Nitrous is one of the things that have made your car fast. It's part of the total package.

He races by your rules if he wants a shot at the title. To be the man he has to beat the man. :D

That's like telling you to just stick the tip in. It's your car vs. his and your car has nitrous, plain and simple. You bought it and installed it and why the hell wouldn't you use it? It's just a power adder and I don't see anybody asking people to remove their turbo or supercharger before they run. Tell him 'Run what ya brung'.

wow this could go so many ways. where is this race going to be? on the street or at a track?? what tires are you both going to use?? whats to prevent him from using a nitrous system??
all he has to do is put slick on his car and he'll walk you but if he is on street tire and your on slicks then good race and i'd say to practice on your reaction times.

he goes by your rules because u have the title. if he doesn't like it then say no race. then he can only be #2

Tell him that if his car is as bada$$ as he says it is then he shouldn't mind a little spray. Call him out and refuse to go naturally aspirated unless he pulls off one spark plug wire to make up for the difference in engine size.

Or just wait a couple weeks until the rich kid wraps his car around a light standard and then you won't even have to race him to retain your title.

Here is what I see. You ran a 12.54 on slicks....he ran on street tires. Disadvantage. he will whine. "You have slicks, let me get slicks" 118 vs 107....100-115hp difference. 440 vs. 302, BIG torque difference. Not to smash you, but his car IS faster N/A vs. N/A.

I say that you SHOULD be able to spray him. We are talking about who has the fastest CAR in town, not who is the fastest N/A. Where is this punk, I want a piece :D

Another vote for "Run what ya brung!" That's the name of the game in street racing.

Just tell him that your car is set up to run on the spray & not N/A (ie gears, tune up, etc).

If he's afraid that his stroked 440 isn't enough ($12,000++!!!), then that's his problem!

I agree with SaleenGTS. Race with the spray. Or do it for free and do it both ways. Do you have to bet $2000, too? I MIGHT bet $20 on a race, but never $2k.

Heck yeah spray him, if he can spend 12 grand on a car like that and is worried about a 302 that is sad. If he was smart, he would buy mustang, and buy a ford crate motor BB. 512CI, 600 HP N/A, with only 9.5 compression. Dummy he is. Messen with that old mopar crap. If he is worried, that shows that he is going to be nervous, phsyc the heck out of him, thats the name of the game. He ain't got a chance, run him motor, and if he starts pulling arm and fire. Work on his brain and you wont have a problem!

TIme to bust out the DSC....ditchfield speed secrets..jk. Whens this happening?? Ill drive up and check it out. Maybe your cousin will let me drive his car.

if you had a supercharger installed, would you remove the head unit for him just so you wouldn't be 'cheating?' didnt think so. ya have a power adder, you spent the money on it, so take advantage and use it!

Havent heard much from you in a while man. Glad to see ya back. Well, what I would suggest is, tell the guy you all will run two runs. First being with you spraying, second you all on motor.

But if you gotta do one run, make it a fun, close race. The kind stories will be told about in your town. The show down between the two speed dogs of the town.

Even if he wins. You didnt spray him, and you always can next time and blow his doors slam off. Let him brag a little bit first, then show him up.

Dude, it must be nice being on top of the food chain. ;)

you know how many people we hustle with our "all motor stock" stang..i cant remeber the last time we lost $$..people are dumb..i give people flashlights to look at out huslting car and they can even tell that there is aluminum heads on it!!!!the nitous we cant hide anymore but still only about 4 people know what the car actaully does

and I wasn't telling you how irresponsible street racing was, i said in that situation where 2 lanes merge into one it was foolish. Neither of you were going to let off, and you knew that before the race even began.

I agree run what you brung, I like that spark plug analogy. If he says anything I'll say pull a plug and loose some cubes, that will make it fair.

Get this! He is definatly worried about loosing.

He is in the process of removing all his interior, and his bumpers! haha! Also hes got a set of 295 DR's now.

This is gonna be a good one, and it WILL be on tape :-D

I wouldn't lie man. Just say you're gonna run N20 cause that's what you have. Tell him if he's too scared, he can race some slower cars.

He knows you have the nitrous, that's how your car is setup. Tell him to take his crank and rods out, cause he has a stroker, and that's just not fair, LOL.

This will be the first important run with the N20. 475hp, on slicks, on the stock 1989 T-5. Hoooo man. Best not powershift on this run. :D

Sky - hey man, I wish you the best of luck with the race, but be prepared to break something. A 12.54 on motor + 175HP N20 on sticky tires = something is probably going to break.

Also, do you have the proper fuel setup for the 175? Maybe you do, and I just missed the post?

You know what I think. :D

Just watch spraying that much nitrous. It is a world of difference from an 80 shot. Use a few gallons of race gas, set the timing around 10 degrees, and to a couple short test blasts then check ALL the plugs immidiately.

If you go lean you can run very slow on a 175 shot. Not to mention melt your motor.

He has a low 11 car on slicks, but with drag radials probably low 12's or so.


Be careful.

He's pulling his interior. Do the same. Yank you passenger seat, back seat, jack, spare tire, and the front sway bar. See if you can find someone that will let you borrow a set of skinnies.

I wouldn't spray off the line with the stock T-5, get rollin first.

I hear crunch in the future if you hit it with 175. I had a totally rebuilt WC T-5 and it lasted 3 runs(plus a little street fun)....one being on slicks, but Iwas at 430 rwhp then.....be way careful, you will have to hit it later in the run to save the tranny.

so when is this going to take place? How far is Ojai from Oceanside??:D :D :p

Yeah this is going to be a killer race.

I already have no back seat, no sway bar, no spare, no sound deadening.

I just have 2 race seats up front and a 8pt cage.

Oceanside -> Ojai = 2.5-3 hrs.

Its definatly going to be on tape, and I will get it up on the site for sure!

There's a good idea. Tell him to come to Carlsbad. Then if he says he won't drive the car that far, then it's not really a "street" car anyways. Plus that way I can come watch it. :D

I would make him run you on your terms or not at all. You are the king of the street in your town. If he wants the title make him work for it.

Sky, I am really glad you decided to spray...175? I dunno...I wouldn't go over 150 but what the hell. Decimate the little snot and get it on video...make sure he knows after the race that it will be posted on the internet whether he likes it or not...Of course we will have to post it on a few mopar message boards...

one thing really irked me...that is the whole "nitrous is cheating" excuse...
nitrous, when you get back to basics, is no different than ANY other power adder...it introduces more oxygen to the moter...the same thing that a blower, a turbo,a bigger intake, or high flow heads would do...Nitrous may be cheaper than some of the alternatives but it is no easier to tune. PPL have a lot of misconceptions about N2O that it is some form of "magic" power that requires no brains to use...just hit a button and go...

whoop his butt and be honest about your N20...It might just convince him to look into a power adder...

Id say you'd have to spray him if he ever hooks up. 118 MPH is a good 11 second timeslip!
So if he does actually get traction it should be a really close race but I have a feeling he probly wont hook it up because if he has no idea of how to set the suspension up hes dead. Its also in the area of anywheres from 3500-3800 LB car.

$12,000 just in the motor....sheesh....well it's hard to beat rich people dude. If you do, they just make the car faster and come looking for 2nds, hehe.

Regardless, if his car has run a verified 118mph..and he runs you on motor only w/ your verified trap speed of 107mph..u lose...obviously so he is on crack for wanted you to run motor to motor. If you use the 150 or 175 pill, then the questions are:

(1) will you be making enough hp to be in the ballgame? I think it's safe to say that with 150shot the answer is yes

(2) will you launch/race good w/ the added power? well, i'd get in a few practice runs b4 hand....sounds like he is/was doing that already ;)

My piece of advice w/ this race is

(1) of course, be responsible...not worth getting a ticket for bragging rights...i speak from experience here..lol

(2) if you are upping the nitrous...test it out beforehand so that you have the fuel pressure/timing set just right.......no sense in going up to a 175 shot and then finding out it's so rich that you only got like 125hp out of the deal......likewise, as others said, you don't want to win so bad that you end up leaning the motor out......if that happens and you break parts..then you end up a loser even if you do win the race...

(3) go to the track and get a number on your car w/ the 150/175 shot. it sounds like you have some time to do that now that he is outta comission for a bit....

BTW, let me just say that $12,000 for a motor....well...if I ever pay that much...it'll put me into the 10s @ 125-130mph.....just the motor.....
