Buddy Just Bought a 98 Cobra.....
His brother has a 2000 Camaro SS. The Camaro has intake (lid), Loudmouth exhaust, new mass air-flow, and DR's. The Camaro runs 13.3 to 13.6 at 108 - ran a best of 13.11 at 108
The Cobra is stock. He raced the Camaro SS and it made him look like he was standing still. Put quite a few car-lengths on him. He brought the Cobra over and gave me a ride. He burnt some rubber with it and went through the gears. It was my first time in a Cobra and only my third time in a Stang. I will say I was impressed with the interior. Very nice leather. The stereo was nice too. It was weird because of the way you sit - much more upright and different than the low-seated position of the LS1. The Cobra was quick, revved all the way to 7 grand. You could tell it wasn't as quick as the LS1, but I'm sure with some mods he can get there. All in all I will say that the Cobra is a VERY nice car (coming from an LS1 guy). I still love the LS1, but I will definitely give the Mustang props. I just like American Muscle and I despise any form of RICE. (I can't imagine the 03 Cobra - it's going to be a stock-LS1-@$$kicker and a handful for modded ones too) |

Let me get this straight.... the SS smoked the cobra hard or the cobra smoked the SS hard? Couldn't tell which you meant...a new cobra should beat a SS pretty easily considering the hp difference....even a slightly modded one.

I've raced some '96-98 Cobras. They ran only about 14.0XX, I'm sorry to say. I've run dead even with a '95 Cobra, but not sure if he was stock or not. That was when I was running 13.97/ 99-100. Can't wait to see what the '03's will do, but I'm betting it will be good.

Sorry I didn't type very clearly.
Yeah it was a 98 Cobra and it got smoked pretty bad by the SS. I agree though if that 03 Cobra is really puttin down the #'s I've heard, it should smoke a lightly modded/stock SS. I guess that depends on what your interpretation of "lightly modded" is Some guys over on LS1 have headers/exhaust, tires, intake, and 4.10's runnin low 12's and they consider that to be "lightly modded". BUT I have heard that a few simple changes frees up a lot of horsepower for that new 03 Snake. |

I meant a set of DR's should put the COBRA in the low 12's. an LS1 with the mods you mentioned would be running them already, unless he is a General Moron.

The fastest F body LS1 I ever raced was a '98-99 Trans Am at HRP. He had ported heads, cam, headers/cat back exhaust and a 3000 rpm stall converter. Also BFG drag radials.
I think he was asleep at the tree as I actually was ahead to the 330' mark. He then came by me like "I was sitting still" beating me by at least 10 car lengths, maybe more at the 1330'. That was when I ran a 13.97 ET. I talked to him a little afterwards ( he was an arragant cuss). He said he ran mid 12's and I do believe him. Rev

Lightly modded is everything outside the motor, exhaust intake gears and tires. Heavely modded is heads, stroker, NOS, Cam and things like that. Those LS1's are deep under the dash, anything done to the motor is a heavy mod, either on your hands or your wallet.
