TJR 07-12-2002 07:53 PM

Good Luck! Are you going to do any all motor passes? Also, how much nitrous are you running?

venumus93 07-12-2002 08:51 PM

GOOD LUCK!

Have fun Sky & post as soon as you can about your times!
Good luck!

*Shaking fist in frustration*

Man, I'm golfing tomorrow. I want to see that car run first hand. Let us know how you do.

Rev 07-12-2002 09:26 PM

Update?

Give us an update on the new set up Skyman, I'm way behind.

Rev

Nitrous Al 07-12-2002 10:06 PM

Sky, what do you think it'll run? High 11's? Low 12's?

exgmguy 07-13-2002 09:58 AM

I am thinking mid-lower 12's on the motor, and broken T-5, uhhh I mean lowe 11's on the hose. :D

Skyman 07-14-2002 12:47 AM

No Broken Parts! Sorry Rob :)

Well Im dissappointed in the MPH, my car refuses to see 110.

I played with shift points from 5700-6100rpm. Found the best to be 5800, and got a couple of 12.3@108.7mph runs.

Best 60' was 1.66.

My car was doing something really weird though. On my launch, I was trying to get upto about 6000rpm, and soon as my car that high, it would just die out to about 1500rpm suddenly. Really strange. So the highest launch I got was about 5200rpm on the 1.66 60'.

Want to hear something even stranger? My friends full weight 88 coupe with a 11:1 306 and TFS heads went 11.9@113 on 8.5" slicks, koni reds, and racecraft lowering springs ON A 1.59 60'!!

Made my drag suspension car look stupid! Figure that one out!

Skyler

Skyman 07-14-2002 12:51 AM

BTW they closed the track early and there was a long delay from a broken car, so I only got 4 motor passes and none on the N20. SO next time for the nitrous.

Skyler

exgmguy 07-14-2002 12:55 AM

I told ya you'd go faster with the Holley. :D

What about the spray?

It must be the air out there or something, because even the new cars you see at your track don't run like they do on my side of the country. I saw a new ZO6 today with only Nitto drag radials going 12.2-12.3's @ 116. That is pretty damn impressive.

Skyman 07-14-2002 12:58 AM

Yeah I dunno, my buddys 11:1 coupe ran well.

I only gained 1mph from the holley though, and I did other things as well. So Im going to mess w/ the car some more. I really think that 110 has to be hiding in it somewhere now.

Also I did run a short belt for the powersteering and smog pump.

There was a 03 Cobra, he was iceing the intake, and doing everything he could. He went 13.0@111.

There was also a brand new lightning. Kid only got it to go 14.4@97mph.

My friends 90 coupe w/ heads/cam/intake and all the rest was only going 103-104, can't figure that one out.

TJR 07-14-2002 07:16 AM

The density altitude at carlsbad yesterday was around 1400 feet, which isn't all that great. With better air, you will probably see 110mph traps.

Skyman 07-14-2002 01:29 PM

TJR- How did you find that out?

Skyler

NO SLO PK 07-14-2002 02:05 PM

Hey Sky,

I'm disappointed I never got a chance to use your drag slicks. Best time was 12.9 at 113.

I spun through first and had a 2.3 60 foot. That was on the BFG drag radials, go figure.

I was disappointed they shut down the track early. I could have used more time for tuning...the mph was still kinda shy of where I thought it should be.

IMO your Saleen still launches hard...impressive as always.

Russ

Skyman 07-14-2002 02:22 PM

Yeah Russ, I would imagine there is still a lot more in your car, especially w/ the slicks.

When did you put on edelbrock heads? How much boost are you running?

Skyler

NO SLO PK 07-14-2002 02:51 PM

I put the Edelbrocks on back in Dec.ember. They were just sitting around and I was going to use them on the Lightning, but I changed my mind.

I get about 9-10 lbs. in the manifold, I think. It's hard to read the boost gauge when watching for redline.

I also think my car was suffering from "one-wheelitis". Basically 140k miles on the stock traction loc with no rebuild. I'm going to rebuild the trak-loc and put in 3.55s at the same time.

TJR 07-14-2002 03:32 PM

TJR- How did you find that out?
I was bored....so I looked up yesterday afternoon's preliminary weather conditions for San Diego (couldn't find Carlsbad), track altitude, estimated the relative humidity, and plugged the numbers into a density altitude calculator.

Altitude (track) = 200ft
Temperature = 72*F
Barometric Pressure = 29.86 inHg
Relative Humidity = 75% (est.)
Density Altitude Calculator

DA = +1422 ft.

Hopefully, the values I used were close to the actual numbers. I like to use the calculator as a rough estimate to determine if the air is good or not.

Sideways LX 07-14-2002 06:20 PM

Defenitely had a good time saturday. What MPH gains could we expect it the air was better? Heres a video of me racing a new SS. This pass was as 12.05@112. Have more videos later tonight so long as Skyler can host them. http://www.mustangworks.com/rides/vi...g692-slot6.wmv

Skyman 07-14-2002 10:11 PM

Well I put in the actual numbers from yesturday.

I found our density altitude to be 2600feet! Corrected it for sealevel.

That converts my time from 12.33@108.8 to 12.0@112.3

Sideways LX's 11.96@113 = 11.63@116.5. Our barometric pressure was pretty low yesturday, which I think accounted for some bad #'s, even though I was happy w/ what I got.

Skyler

TJR 07-14-2002 11:30 PM

Barometric pressure and temperature makes a big difference in DA. The barometric pressure has been high around here lately, but so has the temps (85-90*F). We have been seeing DAs from +2200 to +2500ft the last couple of weekends (Norwalk & Milan).

Skyman 07-15-2002 10:07 PM

Russ-

I was watching a video of your car and it looks like it is running really rich. Blowing some black smoke.

I would expect a 118-120mph trap speed out of it w/ all those parts and that much boost.

Sounds like you need to power shift those gears a little harder too :) hehe.

How much FP are you running? FMU?

Skyler

NO SLO PK 07-16-2002 09:30 AM

Hey Sky,

I didn't know it was blowing black smoke...thanks.

I agree, it should be running 118-120.

I wanted to do the tuning myself, but I think it's time to contact Powertrain Dynamics and set up an appointment.

Regarding the shifting...I know I'm slow...it's a new Tremec and I'm still getting used to the action...it's a lot stiffer than the T5. It'll get there.

Let me know if you think of anything else. Maybe an intake changeout?

Russ

Skyman 07-16-2002 12:43 PM

How much timing are you pulling out?

I doubt that extrude honed cobra is the best intake, but I doubt its really hurting you much.

A good tune would tell a lot, and probably gain you ~50rwhp atleast I would imagine.

Skyler

NO SLO PK 07-16-2002 09:10 PM

There is no timing retard. My final run was at 11 degrees initial.

If I'm blowing black smoke, maybe the ignition could use attention. I have Motorsport plug wires, which probably aren't the greatest. Plugs are NGK. The 6AL and PS-91 coil are new. Cap and rotor are fairly new.

Do you have any experience with the Motorsport wires?

As far as fuel pressure goes, the regulator is set to about 36 psi under zero vacuum. I'm not certain what the FMU goes to...I'd like to back off on the FMU a little, but when I do, it detonates.

This is why I think it might be ignition. What are your thoughts?

Skyman 07-16-2002 10:45 PM

I dont have that much experience w/ blower motors. But ask some of the guys on this site.

From what I understand its almost essential to get a Boost retard, so it pulls timing according to the amount of boost you are getting. Then you should find out your FMU ratio as well. 30lb injectors w/ an of unknown ratio could be wayy to much fuel. I think you are running too much timing and covering it up w/ too much fuel to keep off the detonation. Theres your missing hp I think.

I had motorsport wires before, they are fine, Ive run everything from some taylors to FMS, to pepboys elcheapos. Get this I have half taylors and half cuz my car burned some wires. And it runs great. :) Whats your plug gap?

Skyler

NO SLO PK 07-17-2002 12:37 AM

The plug gap's tight - right around 0.030.

I don't know exactly what to say about the timing retard. ATI claims that you don't need retard with the intercooler...this seems to be the case with other ATI owners I've known in the past.

I gotta try a couple of adjustments, then maybe turn it over to the dyno folks.

89 Cobra LX 07-17-2002 01:59 PM

Skyman, your 60 foots are sick! Do you have a special launch technique or are you just dumping the clutch with slicks?

NO SLO PK, you're probably due for a custom chip at this point....... I think you know that.

Skyman 07-17-2002 03:16 PM

Ive played w/ the launches, and Im sure theres a lot more 60' in it. My car was doing something weird where it would almost die when I revved it up past 5800rpm on the line. So the highest launch I got was 5200rpm and that was the 1.66 60'.

I heat the tires up a bit, not to much, tach it up and let out the clutch, I dont drop it, I let it out quickly.

Skyler

exgmguy 07-17-2002 08:43 PM

Russ, To start off you are running with too much timing. 11 degrees initial is 27 degrees total. You should be around 21 degrees total. Problem is when you kick your initial timing down to 5 degrees, you lose tons of low end. A good cure for this is a custom chip, but you can also just set the initial at 21 degrees and leave the spout out. This will also keep your bottom end.

That should keep you from pinging, and you can lean it out from there, keeping an eye on the plugs after every pass.

46stang 07-17-2002 10:28 PM

hey sky can you tell me more about the 03 cobra! did he have mods? was it on slicks or street tires? 111mph is sweet! I haven't been to the track yet but i got mine dynoed:) 372rwhp and 366rwtq with only mod being a K&N!! I'm going to get some 410's and some kind of exhaust soon!
Leon

NO SLO PK 07-17-2002 11:53 PM

If Sky doesn't mention, I can tell you about the '03 Cobra ...the owner's a pal, I had dinner with him that night.

Btw, I ordered an '03 Cobra 'vert that is being built in the second wave of production. Can't wait! :D :D :D

46stang 07-18-2002 11:19 PM

any info would be great!!!no slo pk
by the way sky, your times are sick! nice times! congrats:)
Leon

Skyman 07-20-2002 03:41 AM

372rwhp! Killer, where did you take it? Are you gonna get some more mods on it?

let me know when you wanna goto the track and you can hit carlsbad with us!

Yeah thanks, but I was really hopeing for 110mph.

Skyler

NO SLO PK 07-20-2002 07:52 AM

Leon, the '03 Cobra at Carlsbad was stock except for removing the silencer and using Nitto drag radials. The owner aired down the Nittos to 15 psi. On the best run he was launching at 3,500 RPM without wheelspin (next time he'll try 4.000).

The owner's name is Luke and he's on the Lightning and Viper boards a lot. He owns those vehicles too.

He ordered an X-pipe and chip through JDM, so he'll be returning to Carlsbad soon. His goal is to eventually get into the 11 second range, and quickly.

i had it dynoed at morgan motorsports in the valley. they are off of reseda blvd. I'm happy with the results! not too bad for just a K&N:) I'm putting 410's in this week:D 1st gear is real high in this car, I'm doing over 50mph before i shift to second!! so the gears should help that! Bassani is coming out with a X pipe specifically for the 03 so I'm waiting for that! should be out soon!! Also I think I'm going to get some slicks, especially for carlsbad! let me know when your going next time! I'm allways up for a trip to the track:)
it's still summer, so when it cools off a little I'm sure you'll crack that 110mph! what all have you done to your car! I see you finally got past 107mph!! and in the summer so thats promising:)

no slo pk: thanks for the info! his 111mph gives me hope when i finally make it to the track:) especially since he is basically stock! Thanks for the launch technique he was using, this IRS stuff is new to me so i basically have to learn all over. he'll probably be doing 11's before no time!
Leon

Skyman 07-20-2002 01:44 PM

Russ- Was 111mph his best? Was he shifting that thing on the limiter?

Leon- It says 381rwhp as your best, right after the 372. Have you pulled the air silencer? When are you gonna get the lightening pulley? :D

Well probably go in a week or two, but ill definatly let you both know.

Skyler

46stang 07-24-2002 10:54 PM

yea it did spike at the very end to 381rwhp, but my previous two pulls were 366 and 368rwhp! so i think it may have been a glitch?? i will get a new pulley pretty soon!!!! sorry i also had the silencer removed as well. check out this video of a 03 with a lighning pulley!! he does 117mph! this guys car just dynoed 442rwhp and with a little more seat time he has gotten his time down to 12.28 on street tires!!! 1.9x 60fts!

Sky,
I'm picking up my GT in 12 hours. Almost feel like driving straight to C-bad tomorrow. :D

Actually let me know when you are going down there again. I actually won't be embarassed to show up, even thought the car will be really slow. I just need to make sure my extended warranty will cover anything I break.;)

Skyman 07-27-2002 02:19 PM

Probably in a week or two, so break that thing in and get ready :-D!
