Post The idle thing again

Thanks for all the replies. I picked up the car last friday. I started it up and it was DOING THE SAME THING! Let me explain exactly what it is doing. When I rev the car in neutral or anytime I have the clutch in and am coming down in speed (like to stop at a light), the rpms will go down to about 500, then go up to 800 or so. Sometimes it will come down to a little less than 500 and you can tell that it may stall, but it recovers to about 700. There are times when I feel that it actually will do the correct thing, which is when I put the clutch in it will come down to about 1000 then, when I completely stop, the idle will go to about 650 very nicely. But, the next time I go to stop, it will do the drop then raise deal. I know I need to take it back to the dealer. I am just so pissed cause here I have my dream car and it is in the shop already! Also, to answer a question, yes they said they hooked it up to a computer and that is where they say the fuel pump was messed up. I am looking at my receipt from Ford and the code says "42". I am not sure if that is even the code, and I have no idea what it means. Any further thought? Thanks

I know this probably doesn't really help, but I would think about talking it to a different Ford dealer if the one you took it to can't diagnose the problem.

Don't worry about it man, it is probably nothing too serious at all. I would swear it is a loose hose in the intake path that is causing this problem. I just don't buy the fuel pump idea at all. A pump usually whines when it is bad or shuts down completely. I also think you would run out of steam at higher rpms if the pump was failing but since your car is so new to you, you might not know the difference here.

-Check the mass air meter clamps before and after the meter. I also agree that another dealer would be a better idea too.

Good Luck

My 2000 has a slight erractic idle but I pay no attention to it. I have no problems with power lose or anything. Mine seems to do it when its cold and damp outside but once warm it usally steadies out. Every fuel injected car I have owned has done that. If it is giving some problems that may effect its driving then I would look into another dealer to check it out.

I will be taking my car to an independent Ford specialist on Thursday. I know that this idle is not supposed to do this. This is 21 century technology and it should be smooth no matter what! The guy today said no way that it was the fuel pump. He feels a sensor or idle control module is out of whack. I will let you know Friday. I will not pay over $20,000 for a car and put up with idle problems. So far this Ford is fix and repair daily. I hope this changes.

I would like to know how you make out. I have the same problem with my mustang. I have had it to the dealer about 8 times. They have replaced the computer, Idle/air by-pass valve, and TPS. I have installed the cold air induction mod and the dealer wants me to put the old setup back just to see if this may be causing the problem. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey my 96 cobra does the exact same thing. Although it has only stalled once. I agree with everyone elese on taking it to another dealership, but if they cant seem to find a problem I would say dont worry about it, I dont. I think it just may be the nature of the beast.

Cool

It is not the fuel pump. Just like the dude you talked to said, it's sensor related. Take it to another dealer or take the dang car back to where you got it and make them give you a new one. Check out your lemon law in your state. Usually, if you have to have it back to work in the shop, for a new car, more than 3 times it's classified as a Lemon and they have to give you a different/new car. Take it to another dealer for fix or take it back and get a new one and tell them where to put the returned car.
It's not the nature of the beast. It should not be doing that at all. It should be running smoothly. Period.

BTW, are any of these cars throwing a check engine light?

When my air hose was disconnected from my intake pipe (See my reply to TomEboi's last thread on this topic), I was getting the same erratic idle that everyone is describing but there was no check engine light.

Check around the MAF for leaks. If you can't find the problem yourself if a few minutes, then you need to find another dealer. These problems should not be hard for good professional mechanics to solve.

The only other thing I could think of is that maybe the sensor on the MAF is self could be damaged.

Idle probs you guys described are related to the air temp sensor. Rotate it 180. that should solve it. My car has a funky idle, but that is because I have my Steeda T/A bumped up to 16.

I've got less than 3K on mine so far. Has a moderately rough idle, no hunting so far. I just pretend I have a phat cam ;-)
