Thumbs up Close run with an LS1 SS.

I drove my Mutang to band practice today because the roads are in good shape, and we are supposed to get some snow late tonight.

I spotted Z28 taillights up ahead so I sped up to catch him. It was a Black SS with a flowmaster muffler and big tips. He immidiately dropped down and goosed it. We played around a little then he followed me down a nice, wide open road. (16 mile to the locals)

We held first as I waited for him to make the move. I was a fender ahead, but he took the jump. First gear went by in a flash, and a clean shift into 2nd gave me traction and a slight nose ahead.
I kept the pedal mashed waiting for the shiftlight to shine. I am inching ahead and bang 3rd, still pulling. Just before I shifted into 4th I could see his headlights on the road next to me. He was right at my back tire.

We stopped at the next light and talked.
He said he had exhaust from the motor back, (headers, Y-pipe, cat-back I assume) 3.73's and the little stuff. He said he thought that I was going to kill him. (The Welds, hood, turndowns, and lumpy idle) I told him his car hauls a$$, and asked if he ever ran at the track.
He said mid-high 12's. I gave a waive and turned around to go home.

Nice kill! What does your car run? I know a kid around here that has a '98-99 camaro SS, auto and he has exhaust. I have yet to run him. Hopefully I will soon. Should be a good race.

It was definitely a perfect race. Nice to race someone who is cool too.

On motor I usually run 12.8-13.0 @ 110-111.

He is obviously right with me on the e.t., and his trap speed might be 109? He did'nt say.

Damn, good run. Its getting scary when LS1's with just exhaust and the "easy stuff" are running so fast (I havent raced one yet but am a little hesitant)
exgm what mods do you have. Why didnt you spray his a$$. Hope the blower goes on soon then it'll be an easier kill.

I have TFS ported heads, ported GT-40, E-303, 24 lbers, C&L 73, 3.73's, and exhaust. I would have sprayed him, but it has been so cold and I have no bottle heater. Nitrous pressure sucks at 20 degrees. All I would do is foul my plugs out.

I think the ported heads are too much for my stock compression and E cam. I only made 270 hp on a Mustang dyno. (Maybe 285-290 on a Dynojet) I hope that the blower will use up all that extra breating ability.

I have run a bunch of LS1's before with the basic stuff and I win pretty easily. Every car runs differently though.

What are you waiting for? Put that blower on there and smoke these chumps.

FYI, the LS1 cars make anywhere from 265-320rwhp on my mustang dyno (the same one Rob got his numbers from) depending on year and other stuff, with the newer ones being generally faster.

Just curious Gregg, but how does the Mustang dyno compare to the DynoJet? Are there any generalizations? Sorry to get off the subject here.

Uh oh... here we go again...

The short story is that my dyno (a load bearing eddy current dyno, made by MD) places a load on the car that more accurately represents the loads seen on the road/track. This means that the resulting HP numbers are more accurate, but usually around 20-30hp lower than what you'd see from a dynojet. The real benefit to my dyno is that the loading makes my dyno tuning conditions the same as track conditions so that engines aren't as likely blow up later.

In addition to the mass of the drums (the only resistance used in inertia only dynos like most Dynojets), my dyno has two very large eddy current absorbers. These are computer controlled electromagnets, basically, that are programmed by the computer to add resistance as roller speed increases to simulate wind resistance, etc.

Greg, you are like smart and stuff....huh..hu..huh.

Funny thing is that since I put my car through the wringer on your dyno, I changed the plugs due to the oil foul situation and now they are burning perfectly clean.

I have no idea why, but I won't argue.
