Driving the car that beat me...

Well I got beat by a 89 White LX at the street races a few weeks ago I posted about. I gave him a car and the jump but he just had more power and kept pulling on me. It supposedly had a stock motor and just a cobra intake blah blah. It had full drag suspension and was pretty damn gutted.

Anyways friend of mine ends up buying it last week, so I took it for a drive and a good inspection in the daylight.

Fully ported Gt40's that were ground down and painted. Ported cobra intake 70mm TB, 1.7rockers on a B-303 cam, NO ACCESSORIES, REALLY GUTTED. No heater, no side impact bars, no power windows/locks, hatch etc. No door panels, nada.

I drove it and it hauls ***, definatly faster than my car. It pulls SO HARD TO 6250. It was still pulling hard. Is that how the B-Cam w/ 1.7's behaves? My E-cam falls off way earlier. Also the thing moved good down low in the rpms and idled awesome. It may have had a custom chip and it probably pulled so hard down low cuz its so damn light. But I liked the way the motor ran. I'll have to see how my E-cam does w/ 1.7 rockers now.

Sky, supposedly, you ca gain 30-40 HP with a good short block. We're talking a blue printed short block with a torque plate bore honing, and perfect squaring of the crank to the bores and deck.

Gapless rings and a perfect head fitting (valve stem seals, etc.) are su8pposed to mean a lot too.

Most times, all this is only done on competition cars, but it does count, according to the experts.

That's an interesting combo...very similar to the one I'm thinking of building. Glad to hear it pulls hard, but what was it like down low in the rev range?

Skyman 05-12-2002 11:04 PM

Pulled REAL strong down low, I was surprized, but the car was really light too.

Sky,

Found out some interesting things about his car. A buddy of mine that used to work at bottle blown, who installed your roll cage(Matt Graber), said that he and the guy with the 93 supercharged cobra are pretty scandalous. Lets say hidden bottle and all. Check the inner fender wells for bolt holes, between the fenderwell and the plastic dust covers. Supposably he had a botlle hidden in there and the intake was removed, and the cavity space available in there is enormous. Can you say reversed injectors from under the intake. Re-installed. Vertually undetectable. As were the solinoids, behind the dash, all wiring and copper tubbing were covered in wire loom. Pretty tricky if you ask me, but if you lost money, on a race that was supposed to be motor for motor, thats b.s. I also hear that the Camaro is getting fixed now, good to hear. When you gonna have yours up, sure miss seeing you guys out there. Last night was pretty good, considering the cops didnt mess with us. Later bud.

Skyman 05-13-2002 02:58 AM

My cars coming along well. It definatly could have n20. I'll check it out good. I know that guys a sneaky ************!

But that car runs HARD, and w/ those ported Gt40's and the SUPER light weight of that car its just a good runner!

My car will be done this week, justins should be too. See ya out there soon.

If you wanna goto Famoso w/ us this friday email me.

Hmmm...

GT40 heads,
extrude-honed GT40 intake,
24lb injectors,
78mm MAF,
70mm TB,
1.7s on the exhaust,
B-cam,
all in a 2700lb car.

Hmmm. :D:D:D

I had a very similar setup in my 89coupe before I sold it(still kicking myself). My bottom end was a blueprinted 306 with a custom windage tray and Bcam. And that Bcam is no joke. It just keeps pulling, just like you described Sky. Mine idled like a racecar though. It became even more of a monster once I carbed it..

Extremestang 05-14-2002 12:00 AM

I'll send you an e-mail about going to Fomoso. Do you care if Luke, the guy with the yellow stang comes? He's got some slicks, justs needs some 15's to mount them on before friday.

Skyman 05-14-2002 02:27 AM

Yeah Lukes welcome to come! Actually I think were gonna hold off till next week, Im porting my heads still and its going to take a while. I wont be ready by friday.

yo skyman, were they aluminum GT-40's or cast iron?

Skyman 05-14-2002 05:47 PM

Iron

exgmguy 05-14-2002 06:35 PM

Weight is almost everything. A flyweight car like that with around 300 RWHP SHOULD hall balls!

That combo in a full weight GT might go high 12's on slicks, but could hit 11's in a car that probably weighs 2600 lbs.

Mine weighs 2750 and I still have heat, doorbeams, interior, etc....
And it's a GT.

Nitrous Al 05-14-2002 08:49 PM

Sky, are you sure he wasn't running a stroked 302 motor (331 or 347) along with the fully ported GT40 heads and Cobra intake? If I was going to build a "sleeper", I'd stroke the 5.0 to 347 or 349 cubic inches. (302 motor on the outside and 351 power inside.) Any idea what was done to the shortblock?

Skyman 05-14-2002 09:01 PM

Fresh shortblock that was all stock, just a 306.

I will be running the car at the track soon.

With a REAL start, no 1 car and the go ****.

So we'll see who comes up on top then.

Sideways LX 05-15-2002 11:35 PM

Defenitely have to see what that WhiteLX really runs. At night the car looked decent, in the day it's really a bit rough. Skyler, imagine what your car would run with 400 pounds of interior missing?? The previous owner was very fishy, wouldnt be surprised if there was a unit and/or a 347 in it. Anyways, I will most likely come up Sunday and we'll get the car goin. I still have to fix my mysterious noise + source 2 Turbo Coupe wheels. Cya later.

Skyman 05-16-2002 01:49 AM

Sounds good, Thatd be awesome if u come up sunday. Ill have all the porting done. Cant wait to get this SOB back together!!!!

I agree, that thing probably weights 400lbs if not more less than my car. The accessories, cage, wheels, power options, heater, door panels etc, bumpers is over 400bs I would imagine.

Also did you read about there possibly being juice in the door panel, scroll up through the post.
