electronic ignition in 68..
What needs to be done to upgrade to a electronic ignition in a 68. I know the ignition is really holding the motor back and we need to loose the points too. How much is this? What has to be done. I'm sooooooooooooooo clueless on old cars.

The easiest thing is the Pertronix ignition from most mustang places about $60. In reading several boards for several years I've only heard one complaint about this unit and many reports of success. About a 20 minute install. Basically replaces the points with an electronic trigger to fire the coil. You can also upgrade the coil and plug wires for more gusto. You can also install a junk yard ford duraspark ignition http://www.geocities.com/mustangsteve66/conversion.html
For bragging rights or racing action, you can step up to an MSD ignition. Personally, I still have points, but am considering the Pertronix. (If I ever finish painting and putting the car back together.) |

Can't you run an MSD box with the petronix?

I tried the different electronic ignitions and my car just never ran right. Even after I put on the msd. The msd helped but the car just never fired right. So I spent the money and got the msd distirbutor and the car livened up and ran like it is supposed to.

I put the Pertronix thingy in a couple of years ago and it is great. Took me about 15 minutes to do it. Best 65 bucks I ever spent. E.

I think you can run the msd with the petronix but I would call summits tech dept and ask for sure. I just put a 6al on a 72 with a duraspark distributor so you could always get a duraspark unit from a junkyard and use it too.

Look in Mustang Monthly. They always have someone advertising it. Here in one I have handy Virginia Classic Mustang's ad lists them for $61.00. Good price.

Could you give me the phone # or how I could order it. I don't have one of those magazines, and I have no clue even where to buy one...

Virginia Classics does not have a web page unlike most of the big mustang places.
NPD should have the pertronix http://www.npdlink.com/flash/movie.html Or Mustang Plus http://www.mustangsplus.com/ There are several other mustang places identifiable by a web search. |

Mustang Plus (on the web) has Petronix ignitors for $61.95 and "Flame Thrower" coils (40,000 volts) for #28.95. My main advice is to avoid Mallory ignition systems. I have a Unilite system which required replacement of the "electronic module" after 18,000 miles. The guy at the parts store said " That's longer than usual". If i did it over, I'd use all MSD stuff with a magnetic pick up.
