My Animal Rescuing Adventures, and Clashing with Mullets

This is kinda long, so if my stories usually bore you to tears, skip to the next thread

My best friend from Maryland came up to spend the week with me, and we decided to partake in GIRLY activities together, i.e. SHOPPING

So we go to the mall, and of course I insisted on going by the pet store. The shop is owned by this mulletted, bug-eyed nasty redneck with tattoos, and the minute I walk in, I notice this little canary looks kinda sick. Upon closer inspection the poor guy was huddled on the floor of his cage all puffed up with discharge coming from his eyes, and he was wheezing heavily as if he couldn't breathe very well.

I mentioned to Mullethead that this bird may be ill, and he got extremely defensive and said the bird was just a "fatso"

I didn't have the cash on me, so I left, and went back to the store the following morning with a checklist for sick birds (which btw this canary had 3/4 of the stuff on the list).

Guys, I thought this dude was seriously going to hit me

. I think he has had the ASPCA called on him many times, because he immediately went off and said the bird only had a cold (but yesterday he was just fat?!) Anyways, after soothing feathers of both Mullet and the canary, I paid $35 for him (male canaries can catch $75-125 when healthy) and brought him home.

This poor little tweety ate like a PIG, I don't think he had been fed very well. I've been giving him a diet of 20% seed, and 40% vegetables, 30% fruit, and 10% cereal. I think his ailment is a birdy respiratory disease, for which I went and bought some antibotics to be administered via his water dish, and I also "persuaded" him to drink more via a water dropper

. He seems to be doing better, he's less puffy and hops around more, and is STILL EATING!!! Sheesh

well at least the more he eats, the more he drinks, hence more medicine!

We made a vet appointment, but I hope I can see marked improvement before then, because we really can't afford to take him

Just checking him out and medicine could easily be $150-$200 for a bird, which is classified as an "exotic pet". He still looks like a tennis ball with cute little footys, but he is obviously feeling better and more lively, so he just might pull through! When I first brought him home, I thought for sure he was a goner.

Does anyone here know anything about birds and their health?? I'd love some advice

thats so sad...ure a saint belle

lucky birdy, hopefully...but unfortunately i dont know anything about bird health...maybe if you expain to the vet how you found him like that and such and cant really afford a visit all that well, the vet will discount the visit (ive seen doctors do this with people before...its touching sometimes)...who knows...you probably saved this little bird and maybe the vet has a soft spot...you name it yet?

Yup, I wanted to do that as well when she first told me about it. I reconsidered my options because going to jail for white trash just doesn't feel worthwile to me.

Elisa looked depressed all night, so I finally just gave her every single bit of cash I had left and told her to go rescue that little bird.

Yeah, we have a Lovebird named "Birdy-Footy" or "Peep-peep"......both are kind of his name.

We've had a lot of bird over the years and all I can say is that their health is a fragile thing when they get sick. A few of our birds got sick and died in only a couple of days with what started out like cold symptoms. As long as he is still eating that is a very good sign. Also when they get really weak they will just sit on the bottom of the cage instead of standing on the perch. If you have seen signs of improvement he will probably be fine - all the ones that we had that died just got worse in a hurry.

In that case, I'll take his actions as a good sign. If this little birdy gets worse, it's going to break her heart.....

Well Belle, I am so proud of you. Really shows the sweet side of you. I have been looking into adopting a cocateil. Theres several sites you can go into about caring for you pets. The best thing that ever happened to that little birdy is You. Try maybe petcare on line, maybe they can help you find a cure for that precious little darling. But I am sure you'll do just fine on your own. Odie

I knoooow, house birds are so fragile. Parrots are a bit more hardy, but the canaries and finchs...WHEW! They are walking disasters!
