Post Good race with a ‘98 Z28 LS1

I am out lookin’ for a stomp when I come upon this Z28 heading north on Rt. 1. He was one car ahead of me at the light. When it turned green and the traffic moved forward, I threw him a rev as I passed by to try and bait him. As we approached the next light, I slowed down with the hope that it would turn red which it did. And what’s beside me, the Z28. Perfect!

I was ready to go either way and when it turned green we both hit it! It was a pretty even start, I may have spun more than he did. We were literally side by side through 2 gears, I shifted into third perfectly and pulled 2 car lengths on him with another 1500 rpm to give, but he got off the gas. Kill!

I slowed for the next light and he stopped parallel to my car. I looked over, guy about mid 40s, and he says ”I would have kept going with you but I was coming up on traffic. With my just gained confidence, I said Okay! You want to go again? He said no and asked, What year is your Mustang? I responded and asked him the same, He replied ’98 Z28 and then drove off.

I don’t know if he had any mods, but the race went about as expected against a 98 Z28 LS1 (high 13s). I figured he’d hang through the first 2 gears with the extra torque but I would come out ahead in 3rd gear with the additional horsepower that my car has.

The great thing with this race is the revenge factor. I got stomped by the LS1 camaros when I was running 15s prior to the mods (See user rides section).

Good kill. Nice to see someone else who also sees LS1's that run mid-high 13's. We all know that there are faster modded ones. And then there's even faster Stangs too. In the end, it's "run what you brung" on the street.

At the track, I've seen LS1s run between 12.8-14.0 depending upon mods, driver ability and weather/traction conditions.

I've heard that LS1's really suffer badly in the heat. That's due to the engines being stuffed half way back under the dash board. If you can, race'em on a hot day. They will suffer more than most. At least, that's what I've heard.

great killing, i was on the highway tonight Ih-10 when i came upon a grey 98-00 z, i figured id play with him, we were already cookin about 85-90 mph, but i pushed passed him up until 105 or so, he got behind me, but then fell back like he didnt want none so i kept going,

i wouldnt call my experience a kill because he most likely didnt give it what it had.

And i want mods like yours....whatever they are?

Im suprised that you pulled him in 3rd instead of second or first. Third gear is usualy where LS1's take over. Good job. Im glad that people here believe that LS1's pull mid-high 13's stock. Over at LS1.com they all seem to think that they run 12's stock. Even the guys who are hitting mid 13's seem to think that its all in thier driving and if someone better were driving their car it would hit 12's all day

Nice kill. I would say that most Ls1s with some bolt ons run mid to low 13's with avg drivers, a good driver can run 12's but most people I have encountered on the street aren't John Force Jr. The key to beating a Ls1 is also in the lauch this is where I get my friend with my Lt1 and he has to play catchup the whole time. From a 6o mph roll a Ls1 with some minor mods will be very tough though.

I think FastBlkz28 has just about got it nailed down. What he says is on the mark from what I've seen.

Yes, I saw a guy from LaFayette La. At HRP with a black '99 TA with exhaust, intake, and maybe other bolt-ons or who knows what?. He also had a 2800 RPM stall converter and BFG drag radials. He said he ran mid 12's and I believe him. I ran against him at test and tune and actually beat him about half way down the track, when he came blasting by me, winning by 10-12 lengths? He was probably asleep at the tree, LOL. The car was quick.
